Fresh News

The Riverwest Co-op is more than just a place to buy fresh kale or a Seitan Philly. It’s a cooperative—a community that shares a vision of food for people, not for profit.

If you want to help us make that vision into a reality every day, we’d like to invite you to run for our Board of Directors. Our 2014 Annual Meeting is coming up on Sunday, May 4th, and we'll have several seats to fill.

We have 9 members on our Board, each serving 3 year terms. Board member attend monthly meetings where we hash out policy, work on the committees that carry out those decisions, and take turns closing the store.

If you're inspired and would like more information, contact Ellie. You’re also welcome to attend our March 26th or April 23rd Board meetings, both at 7 pm in the Riverwest Currents office, 829 E Clarke St.

And last but not least, we'd also like to give a hearty welcome to our interim board members Cami Thomas, Alex Brower, and Andy DiMezza!
Volunteer News

Volunteer News

We're grateful for the many hours Ashley Adams has spent volunteering in the cafe and pitching for the Seitan Phillies over the past two years. While we're sad to see her go, we're proud to see her graduate from MIAD and we wish her the best. Thanks for everything, Ashley!

The Co-op would also like to congratulate our volunteer Lois Bielefeld on the completion of her new documentary, Ladies Out. It's been two years in the making and we're excited for its release.

Nutrition Corner

Vitamin D is an important nutrient involved in immune health, calcium absorption, and the reduction of inflammation. Your body can naturally absorb it from sunlight, but with a winter like this, most of us don't spend enough time outside to get what we need.

The recommended daily intake of Vitamin D is 400 IU, but very few foods contain vitamin D naturally. Fatty fish like salmon, tuna, and mackerel contain the most, which isn't very helpful for vegans and vegetarians. Most people get their Vitamin D from fortified foods like milk, soy milk, and breakfast cereal. A cup of fortified milk contain about 100 IU; one serving of fortified cereal contains about 40 IU.

If you aren't out in the sun daily, or have a cold you just can't beat, you may be Vitamin D deficient and should consider adding a vitamin D supplement to your diet.

Cafe News

A big thank-you to all the contestants who stepped up to the challenge at our Chili Cook-off, and congratulations to Gina D. and Lisa K. and their winning Bloody Mary-inspired chili.

Competition was fierce, with a 3-way tie for second place. Thanks to Jacob M. (who, after 11 rounds, won the pepper eating contest), Tess K., Nik B., Sandra H. and Stephanie P. for all the delicious entries and to everyone who came, ate and voted.

A
special thank you to Jim Linneman for hosting us again at his beautiful bar.

The Brewers get all the press for having a dog on their team. But the Seitan Phillies did it first.
