TWAK: This Week At King's. March 3rd-9th 2014

THIS WEEK AT KING'S
March 3rd-9th, 2014

Hi friends,
So last night was pretty damn fun. There were egg races and world champion basketball jugglers and semi-comprehensible toasts and wacky waving arm flailing inflatable tube men. I would just like to thank everyone so much for coming and celebrating the 225 with us. This being Oscars night and all, I have a very long (and maybe kind of boring to you, but super important to me) list of people I’d like to thank for making the night a smashing success. First and foremost, the events committee, particularly Meg, Jess, Katharine, Eleanor and Eleanor, plus Erica, Tom, Alex, Emmett, John, Katie, that random older guy in the Quad who helped us move couches and all the other folks who help us set-up and get prepared. You guys are super stars. For all those who helped us to stage the event namely, the Alumni Association, the Advancement Office and the President’s Office, many thanks. For those who helped with the logistics aka Alex, Sheldon and the Facilities staff, Kim, Nick, Asher and the Wardroom crew, Nick Hatt, Patrol, Janet in the Archives, Neil Hooper and the gym staff - a huge thank you is due. We would have been at a stand still if it weren't for your efforts. A special shout out to Alex and Michaela for going above and beyond. And to all of you for coming, thank you. You made the evening an incredibly zany, “high school dance from hell”-esque, wonderful success. To quote Phil Taber, “it was better than I expected”.

Happy Second Last TWAK (from my end anyway, I really hope the world doesn’t end between me and Jacob B-K taking over),

H

p.s. If I forgot to thank anyone, I am terribly sorry. You are great people.
p.p.s. Once again, thanks to Erica Guy, who provided the awesome photos you are seeing in the header of this email. She is available for weddings and birthdays.
p.p.p.s. Thanks to Sage for the title. Last night proved that this school really is a gem off of the beaten track.

ANNOUNCEMENTS, ANNOUNCEMENTS, ANNNNNOUNCEMENTS!

BIG NIGHT AUDITIONS THIS FRIDAY & SATURDAY
Everyone’s favourite annual talent variety show dinner is taking place this March 26th at 7PM in Prince Hall and the show is in need of a SLEW OF PERFORMERS. Whether you are a singer, dancer, basketball on finger spinner (shout out Rick Pidgeon),
or have any remote talent whatsoever, sign on up for an audition on Doodle. Auditions will be taking place on Friday from 7:30-10:30PM and Saturday from 1-4PM. I hosted Big Night alongside Tom Lute in first year and it was fun of epic proportions. At one point, I was shirtless singing The Police’s Roxanne in front of 400 students and my profs. P.S. Sorry for forgetting this announcement last week Nick. I hope you can except my apologies.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY: PATROL WORKER
LAST WEEK I TOLD YOU THAT EVERYONE’S FAVOURITE DEAN, NICK HATT, REALLY LIKES TO YELL AT ME VIA EMAIL AND WROTE THIS TO MESSAGE TO ME IN ALL CAPS. SO GUESS WHAT, WE ARE WRITING IT IN ALL CAPS AGAIN BECAUSE EVERYONE LOVES REPETITION AS MUCH AS THEY DO MARINELAND. MORAL OF THE STORY: PATROL WORKER APPLICATIONS ARE DUE MARCH 9 AT MIDNIGHT. FORMS ARE AVAILABLE AT ALEX HALL FRONT DESK.

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION STUDENT AWARDS
Involved at King’s? Get good marks at King’s? Contribute to the quality of life at King’s? Love King’s? You got to apply to the Alumni Association Student Awards at King’s. They’ve got a slew of awards for students that go to King’s. The deadline on these awards are March 13, 2014 and they are due in the Advancement Office at King’s. I actually managed to finish every sentence in this entry with the word King’s. I actually managed to slightly change this entry from last week while still ending the new sentence with the word King’s. Look, mom, I did the same entry as last week except added another sentence that ended with the word King’s. I am going to try to keep this up and add a sentence that ends with King’s every week until March 13 when these awards are due. CRAP. I just failed. But I am going to keep on going because I promised I would add a sentence or more on every single until March 13 that ends in King’s. Oh no, I also have to talk about flags and King’s. Can we all just take a moment to marvel the coat of arms of King’s?
I am going to recreate this one day… I’ll bring a lamb into the quad with a FLAG AT KING’S!  Remember when I said I’ll just keep adding lines until the deadline for these awards on March 13th 2014 and make sure every sentence ends in King’s? Well, I’m doing it… some may say, I’m a King(‘s). THIS CLUSTERCUSS (I am hyperlinking this again because I really think it is great) OF WORDS IS STILL GOING AND ENDING IN KING’S. Cut it out Haydn, this is really starting to get old, do you consider yourself a King(‘s)? PLEASE COME SOON MARCH 13, I CAN’T POSSIBLE KEEP ENDING EVERY SENTENCE IN KING’S.

TAKE PART IN THE THIRD ANNUAL KING’S SQUASH TOURNEY
As I’ve told you from week to week, the King's Squash Society is hosting its third annual squash tournament for players of a variety of levels on March 29th and 30th. They’ll be playing squash and hosting the 1st annual squash growing competition for who can grow the largest squash. I’m just kidding, but that sounds like a King’s thing, does it not? Wanna play in the tournament? Have any questions? Wanna demand that a squash growing competition be added to this event? Drop the Squash society an email at
kings.squashed@gmail.com.

IT’S THE LAST WEEK TO HAND IN FOOD FOR LIBRARY LATE FEES
As you may know, our lovely King’s library is hosting the third annual Food for Fines Food Bank Drive from now till March 9th… that is THIS COMING SUNDAY FOLKS! That means that anyone who owes late fees to the library can void these fees by bringing in a non-perishable food donation to the Circulation Desk of any Nova Net library by this SUNDAY! Each non-perishable food donation will reduce your fines by $2. I wish I had something witty to say about Nova Net or non-perishable food or something related to this post. Maybe, if anyone can tell me what aleph1 is in relation to Nova Net, I will give you a prize.

CHAPEL FLOOD UPDATE
Some stellar news for you folks. The work on the chapel following the flood is nearly complete. It’s looking like the Chapel will get to move into their old stomping grounds on March 10-11. For all the latest updates, visit the King’s Chapel website.

VALEDICTORIAN, HONOURARY CLASS PRESIDENT & GRAD GIFT VOTING ON ALL OF THIS WEEK IN THE KSU OFFICE
I’ve always wanted to put all of the event description in the title of the event and now I have done just that. And now that it is past two in the morning and I just want to go to bed, it is ever so more convenient that I have done just that.

EDUCATION & THE PROMISE OF PROSPERITY: SHOULD A GOOD EDUCATION GUARANTEE A JOB? DISCUSSION
630 Francklyn St., 12 noon
Well I certainly think so and I don’t think I’m the only one. It’ll be interesting to see what guest lecturer Karl Turner has to say about this very stimulating topic that is near and dear to our hearts. Now if I could only find out where Francklyn St. is. Side note: Did the city planners make a typo when they spelt out Francklyn or is it just me? When I think Francklyn, I think
 god bless Bruce Cockburn.

What I do know is that there is going to be apple cider and ginger snaps at this event. SOUNDS LIKE SOME FREE VICTUALS TO ME. P.s. Michal sent me this event on behalf of the bookstore and she made a *Where's Fluffy* joke because she didn’t know where the room was going to be. I mean, you guize know who Fluffy is, right? #infinite #playlist #michaelceraplaysthesameroleineveryfilm #butitsokaybecauseifiwasafilmactorifeellikethatwouldbetheextentofmycareertoo

I’ve always wanted to make an entire event description a hyperlink, so this is my big shot. There’s going to be a very special Open Mic at the Grad House with money raised (suggested $2 min. donation) going to Heshima, a wonderful organization working to empower youth with creativity. I think you should go. All you have to do is click on this massive hyperlink to get to the Facebook page and click attend in the top right hand corner. You won’t regret it.

TUESDAY: On this glorious, glorious Pancake Tuesday, could there be anything better then FREE PANCAKES, FRUIT, SAUSAGE AND GLUTEN FREE FOOD? (Manning Room, 10:30AM). Well, maybe a free student supper at St. Andy’s United, but that’s downright debatable (St. Andrew’s United, 5:30PM).

If you'd like to see your announcement in HAYDN'S LAST TWAK EVER then make sure to send your event to cvp@ksu.ca by 11:59PM on March 8th 2014.  You've may been able to tell from my previous TWAK's but if not, I'll make a confession. I love oddities. I especially love receiving cheesy "personalized" spam emails from half-way around the world. I got this one the other day, so I thought I'd share it with you footer folks - "Hello Dear, My name is Rev.Hannah Alec from western Australian, I am a dying widow who have decided to donate some of her wealth to a reliable individual that will use this money, $1.5Million to help the poor and less privileged ones. So if you are willing to accept this offer and do exactly as I will instruct, then get back to me. Rev.Hannah Alec." Don't get scammed now folks.
