NAV Tip of the Month – Zero Inventory Field

One of the little known features of Microsoft Dynamics NAV is the Zero Inventory field within the item table.  This field is often not visible on the item card screen, but it can be easily added.  The Zero Inventory field is a check box field that identifies an item as not carrying an inventory value.  When an item setup as zero inventory is sold or purchased, the transaction posts to the General Ledger without any effect on the Inventory, Cost of Goods Sold, Direct Cost Account, or Purchases account.

Many NAV clients have found this feature very useful for items they don’t keep in inventory but may purchase and keep track of the vendor and purchase costs.  This feature can be useful in eliminating the need for GL account number access to entry-level people keying in sales, AR, purchasing, and AP transactions.  An item setup as Zero Inventory can have Purchase and Sales prices associated with it, as well as Vendor and Customer Specific prices.  You can setup as many items as required as Zero Inventory; however, it is suggested that you use an item number or some other field within NAV to allow you to easily filter them out of reports and lists of items.  Note that a quantity will still be tracked for an item setup as Zero Inventory, but it will have no value.
