Adaptation indicators

CXC’s Adaptation Indicators project has entered Phase 1. This scoping stage will pull together a short list of indicators across all three themes of the Scottish Climate Change Adaptation Programme. The indicators will specifically address the Objectives set out in the SCCAP.

Phase 2 will involve drawing together information and analysis to provide a picture for each indicator of past trends and current status. The project team is taking shape, with additional expertise being brought in to address infrastructure topics.

Delivering impact for the the  SRDP

CXC is playing an important role in supporting the Scottish Government to help ensure that the funding for agri-environment-climate and forestry schemes in the 2014-20 SRDP is directed to actions with the greatest potential to deliver impact and value for money.

The Scotland Rural Development Programme is a £1.2 billion programme of economic, environmental and social measures. CXC will produce spatial targeting maps and criteria to be used for scoring applications with potential climate impacts. Members of CXC are also on the project Steering Group.

UN report: Climate change likely to be 'severe, pervasive and irreversible'.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's Fifth Assessment report was published this week with evidence that the global climate is already changing. The impacts include increases in temperature, changes in rainfall, melting of snow and ice, and species changing locations or responding differently to the season.

The report comes from Working Group II (impacts and adaptation). Working Group III (mitigation) will report later in April.

Pete Smith, ClimateXChange Science Director  said:
The IPCC’s Fifth Assessment Report draws together scientific evidence that clearly demonstrates how climate change is already having an effect. This will impact all aspects of Scottish society, both as a result of changes to our climate and global changes that affect business supply chains and food security.

The report suggest that we can take a range of adaptation measures that will lessen the effects of a changing climate but we need to couple this with further reducing emissions. The focus needs to be on creating a climate resilient, low carbon Scotland.

Economic arithmetic of peatland restoration

Peatland restoration can contribute to meeting a range of climate change, water quality and biodiversity policy challenges. ClimateXChange is involved in a range of projects on the topic.

In a new article in the Science of The Total Environment Andrew Moxey and CXC's Dominic Moran present the results of an analysis that strongly suggests even a narrow focus on carbon benefits alone is sufficient to justify restoration in many cases. Including possible additional non-carbon benefits reinforces this.
