Notes from Shari

Spring is trying to arrive here! 60 degrees one day, then 30 degrees the next. Does that mean Spring is really here? Almost? I have to believe it! Now I’ve lived my entire life in the Midwest and know that a last snow storm could hit anytime. I’ve seen snow on Easter Sunday in years past so anything is possible. That said my hopes are high that warmer temperatures are on the way to stick around.

Testimonial

"My friend Theresa and I were looking for a unique way to celebrate our birthdays this past year. Shari Pontillo at Twisted Fiber Studio provided the perfect answer. We booked her for a journal making workshop at Theresa's house. She provided a wealth of beautiful papers, paints, stamps, and other materials so that each could make a unique journal. We added the wine and appetizers and the creativity just flowed. I would highly recommend booking Shari for your next party."

Resources

In my art, I often work with scrapbooking materials and paper.  When I use regular glue it can warp the paper. And that doesn’t look professional or even pretty. That’s when I discovered Scor-Tape. It is incredibly strong double sided tape that comes in a variety of widths from 1/8” – 6” and 6” x 6” and 8.5” x 11” sheets. Clean edges and great hold.  Once it’s on the paper, it is permanently there.  For making it easy and quick to assemble journals (inside and out) I always turn to Scor-Tape. Find it online at a variety of stores.

This week’s Feature

As I explore my obsession and fondness for book page art, I stumbled upon book page poetry.  Many examples can be found on Pinterest and the Internet.  While I wouldn’t think of myself as a poet, the entire concept seriously intrigued me.  The opportunity to play with words, use doodling, and create art all in one art form is serendipitous.  It is an art form that can be done anywhere, trains, planes and automobiles but most importantly in front of the TV with minimal supplies.

The pictured poem I created started in pencil as I “wrote my poem.” Then and only then I started the artistic embellishment and used INK, specifically a Pigma Micron Pen 01 in blue.  The various forms of this poetry vary from refined to quite raw.  There are poets that black out all words on the page except the words of the poem and there are those that create an artful path from word to word. The artful ones do call out to me but I recognize the place for the “raw” style.  I will be creating more poems and posting them on Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagram regularly.

Have you ever seen this type of poetry and art before? Are you an avid art poet?  Share your thoughts and experience below.
