Spring 2014 Newsletter

Message from Bev Leaver, Executive Director

Stonegate Community Health Centre is still here and will stay here to serve this community.  The rest of Stonegate Plaza has been emptied out and is being prepared for demolition.  We were very sad to see the closure of the Stonegate Outreach Store as we value the contribution of the Stonegate Ecumenical Community in addressing the needs in this community.  The Outreach Store provided a way for community members to donate things they no longer needed and others to buy things at a price they could afford.  The Store also provided meaningful volunteer positions for community members.  The loss of the Store will be felt widely.

We are expecting to see demolition starting soon and proceeding over the next couple of months.  Stonegate CHC will lose our Annex location that houses our Dental Clinic and all of our children’s and family programs.  We do not yet have a date for when that site will close.  We are working toward relocating the Dental Clinic and some after school programming into our main site.  We have secured classrooms in St. Mark’s School to hold our children’s programs over the summer and Christ Church St. James has generously offered to accommodate some of our Early Years Programs and to host, once again, our weekly Farmer’s Market.

The developer, VanDyk Group of Companies continues to work with Stonegate CHC to support us staying here to serve this community.  They will demolish around us and leave Stonegate CHC standing.  We are also working toward Stonegate CHC’s long term home on this site above the future grocery store.

This is a time of significant and disruptive change.  We will all have to make some compromises in order to keep our services running as best we can.  We greatly appreciate the generosity of support that we have received from this community and hope that we can count on your continued support to keep Stonegate CHC here, where it belongs.

New Electronic Health Record
In December, Stonegate CHC replaced its electronic health record with a new system called Nightingale-on-Demand.  It was a big transition for our team, and included dedicated training and resources to ensure all of our clients’ information was properly and securely transferred to the new system.

What does this mean for clients?  For the most part clients should see very little difference as a result of this change.  The biggest difference is for clients coming to the Centre for health or counselling appointments:   when you check in the medical receptionists will ask you to verify your personal contact information, and if you have an OHIP card, they will ask to see the card as well.

Over time we expect that this new system will help us provide services in a more effective and efficient way.  Congratulations to the staff on the success of this initiative, and thank you to our clients for your patience as we continue to learn how to make the most of the new system so we can give you the best service possible.

Board Focus Groups – You are invited!
As our community continues to change and grow, the Stonegate CHC Board of Directors wants to hear from community members about: What community issues are important to you?  How can we work together to find solutions to those issues?

The Board is holding focus groups to connect with different members of the community.  One was held in February, and this month we are holding 2 more on April 14:

  • For Men of ages, from 2:15 – 3:15 pm in the Multipurpose Room
  • For Parents of Young Children, from 6:00 – 7:00 pm in the basement of the Annex.

Refreshments will be served, and child care and interpretation is available.

Please join us for what are sure to be good discussions. Call us to register at (416) 231-7070.

Client Surveys – coming soon
We will soon be conducting our annual survey of clients.  The survey is one way you can tell us how we’re doing and help us improve the services we deliver.

This year the survey will be distributed by email to clients whose email addresses we have.  In future our surveys will be conducted on a monthly basis, and will be available both by email and on paper.

Spring tips for asthma and allergies
The spring has finally arrived bringing seasonal allergies along. Pollen and outside mould may trigger asthma and allergy symptoms.

What can you do to minimize impact:
-  Keep windows closed in home and car - use an air conditioner if needed
-  Some people may need to avoid going outside when the pollen levels are high  (usually between 5 and 10 am)
-  Check the pollen counts in your area to see when the pollen you are allergic to is at a high level http://www.theweathernetwork.com/outdoors/pollen/canada/ontario/toronto
-   If possible, people with allergies to pollen and mould should not mow the lawn
-   After going outside, take a shower to wash the pollen from your skin and hair and change into new clothes when you come indoors; wash your clothes and dry it using the dryer; avoid drying your laundry outside
