House Bill 5 was signed into law in 2013, changing Texas’ education system in the areas of state mandated exams and graduation plans. Most of the new requirements go into effect during the upcoming 2014-15 school year. Students, teachers, administrators, parents and businesses await and prepare for the opportunities and challenges that these changes will bring. Will students be prepared for success, whether it’s traditional college or workforce training? What impact will this have on local businesses? Join us for an in-depth discussion about how our community can successfully embrace and implement HB5.

Panelists:

  • Mike Meroney is a consultant for the Jobs for Texas Coalition, who supported the passage of HB5. He will talk about the positive impacts they believe the new legislation will have on students and businesses.
  • Edmund Oropez is the Associate Superintendent of High Schools for Austin Independent School District and will oversee the implementation of HB5 requirements throughout Austin’s public high schools. He will address the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in this first year of implementation.
  • Drew Scheberle is Senior Vice President at the Austin Chamber of Commerce, overseeing Federal and State Advocacy as well as Education and Talent Development. He will bring the Chamber’s perspective on how to make sure HB5 is successful for our community.
