Keeping Kentville Connected
In days of yore, the reason that people came to Kentville to Cross the Cornwallis River was because of a giant sandbank – a remnant of the glacial age - that ran through Kentville around Aberdeen Street and on the Cornwallis River. It made for an easy crossing point. The town would later be built around this sandbank and at one point would have a road leading over it. Then, in the 1890s, the townsfolk began to remove the sandbank one load at a time by horse and oxen-drawn carts. The sand was used to create River Street and the rail bed for the Dominion Atlantic Railway. This means that when you're exercising on the Rail Trail you're likely doing so on the sand from the ancient sandbar that cut right through the town!

2:00-4:00 - Friends in Bereavement Support Group: the support group has helped hundreds of local residents find support, understanding, information, friendship, and confidentiality as they grieve the death of a loved one. The group meets on  the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month from 2 to 4 pm at the Kentville Baptist Church. 11:00am-12:00pm - Tablet Time at the Kentville Library. Join us in exploring an app, a book, and a literacy craft that you can take home! Each month we will explore a new app. Time for families to explore our iPads at the end of each session. For families with children ages 3-6.

8:00pm - CentreStage Theatre presents Separate Beds.  Two couples navigate through their relationships on a Caribbean cruise. One seems “perfect” while the other seems “stormy”. The truth and lies of each marriage comes to the surface as they celebrate their 35th year anniversaries at sea. Did you Know?
The Winter Parking Ban is still on until April 15th.

The cost of snow removal in Kentville is up by $38,000 this winter we're over budget by 11 per cent. What a bad winter it has been! The plan is to use some of the reserve funds to pay for the deficit, especially in light of last week's storm.

HR Essentials Course: The Annapolis Valley Chamber of Commerce is very pleased to be partnering again with the Nova Scotia Department of Labour and Advanced Education to provide provincially funded education opportunities to local businesses. You must be currently employed or an owner of an active business.  Each course is 40-hours in length taking place over 10 weeks. Dates: Thursdays April 10 - June 12. Park Street in Kentville continues to pose challenges for drivers. There have been two main problems. Read about the problems and the solutions.

Kentville broadcaster Matt Little leaves for Budapest, Hungary, this week to provide play-by-play for the IIHF women’s under-18 world hockey championships. Read more.

Apple Valley Foods plant in Kentville is undergoing a $10 million modernization, $3.5 million of which will come from the provincial and federal governments. The money will be spent on a new oven, packaging equipment, freezers and other machinery. Read more.

Recreation News
Parks & Recreation Summer Positions: Recreation Intern (1): May 12 – Aug 26, 2014, 35hrs/wk, @$14.00 per hour
The Summer Recreation Intern position will oversees daily operations of summer programs including tennis, pool and day camps. The summer intern will supervise summer staff, assist with special events and support the daily operations of the Parks and Recreation Department. (15 wks)
 
Pool Director (1): June16 – Sept 2, 2014, 35hrs/wk, @$14.00 per hour
The Pool Director will oversee daily operations of the pool including program registration, record keeping, lessons, public swims etc. The Pool Director is also responsible for the supervision of the pool staff. (11 wks)

Response from Recreation Director, Rachel Beddingfield: We are very fortunate in the Town of Kentville to have a number of beautiful options when it comes to enjoying nature and the outdoors, unfortunately, we’re not as good at telling people about it!
Currently we have signage ready to be installed that helps mountain bikers better navigate our extensive bike trail system at the Participark (also known as The Gorge), all we need is for the ground to thaw! Our next step is to install way finding signage and to clearly mark all trailheads. How much we are able to do this year will depend on budget approval. In the meantime, the Gorge, AVESTA's Venue of the Year, is located at the top of Gladys Porter Drive. KCA School News
Save the date! Spring Fling will be held this year on Wednesday May 28, with a rain date of Thursday May 29th. Stay tuned for volunteer opportunities and ways to support teachers! This event is open to the general public.

Arts and Culture

Kings County Museum is now open for the season! Located at 37 Cornwallis Street, the regular hours are 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Watch for exciting new exhibits coming soon on the Apple Blossom Festival and “East Meets West”. 

Recycle, Reuse, And now Repurpose!
The old KCA school will soon be no more but that doesn’t mean there aren’t any treasures to be had! CentreStage received word that there might be some items that the theatre could use. The Theatre will use sound panels, wooden doors and a very large blue velvet curtain and many other sundry items which the theatre calls props!
CentreStage wishes to thank the town of Kentville and its CAO, Mark Phillips, for once again supporting community theatre. Perhaps, Mark will join his son, Luke, on stage one of these days!
