From NMC to President of TALENT 2025

Kevin Stotts enrolled at NMC in the early 90’s and the decision was very easy.  He attended three different high schools by the time he began his senior year in Traverse City and wasn’t thrilled with the idea of moving again.  He was also unsure of what he wanted to study in college but knew he had a passion for history and politics.  The tuition at NMC was affordable and he felt that he could further explore his academic interests and hopefully save a little money before transferring to complete his bachelor’s degree.

Kevin noted that the faculty at NMC were outstanding, but two in particular stood out – Al Shumsky and Stephen Siciliano.  “I wasn’t a great writer when I entered college and Professor Shumsky was a tough but compassionate critic who helped me immensely.”  Dr. Siciliano had this amazing way of teaching history through stories and he fueled my love of the subject that continues today.

After earning an associate’s degree, he enrolled at Michigan State University.  Upon graduation from MSU, he worked for Governor John Engler and several political campaigns before running a statewide scholarship program for low-income children.  He then went on to become the Vice President of Community Programs at the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce.  He is currently the President of TALENT 2025, a collaborative effort of more than 70 CEOs dedicated to talent development, as well as attraction and retention of talent across West Michigan.

“My time at NMC was formative and a wonderful example of the special role community colleges play in a young person’s higher education and personal success.”

NMC Aviation, American Eagle Sign Job Pipeline Agreement

NMC aviation students will get a guaranteed job interview with American Eagle and a $10,000 signing bonus upon hire under a pipeline agreement the airline and NMC signed on March 6.

Under the terms, NMC students may participate in a first interview with American Eagle, a regional carrier based in Fort Worth, Texas, as early as their second year.  Upon completion of both a bachelor’s degree with Davenport University and 1,000 hours as a certified flight instructor, the student will receive an offer of employment and a $10,000 signing bonus.

“We’re really looking for the top professional aviators,” said Richard King, manager of pilot recruitment at American Eagle.  “There’s a lot more to being an airline pilot than having the license.”

King visited NMC, inspecting everything from the syllabus to the aircraft fleet.  He said the Aviation division’s focus on safety, professionalism, and customer service is what the airline seeks.

“After getting to know their operations, we felt very confident in their level of training,” King said. “We offer the financial incentive because we’ve been able to show that pilots coming out of college aviation programs have a much higher success rate in our initial training than those without.”

NMC Director of Aviation Aaron Cook said the agreement is another asset to offer prospective students.  “For our students to have a clear pathway to employment is important,” he said.  “It’s an opportunity for the students to start earlier in their job hunt.”

NMC aviation students typically graduate in two years with 250 hours of flight time.  Then it takes about 18 months to accrue the required 750 additional hours as a flight instructor, which a student can do while completing a bachelor’s.  After four years, whereas a student in a traditional bachelor’s program would just be beginning their flight instructor hours, an NMC student has the hours needed to get a job — and now, a route to one.  “Our students are a couple years ahead of the game,” Cook said.

In addition to traditional, fixed-wing instruction, NMC Aviation also offers training in unmanned aerial vehicles and rotor wing (helicopters).  Learn more at www.nmc.edu/aviation.

What an Impact!

"As a single mother of four children, it’s a challenge to stay in school and work at the White Pine Press while also keeping the bills paid.  Every little bit of financial help I get makes a big impact on my ability to do these things… I hope to set an example for my children, not only by showing them that dedication and education are important, but also by vocalizing my appreciation for and reliance on help from outside sources to reach my goals… It means so much that these aids are available to me.  Thank you!"

The Overlooked Privilege of Attending Community College

What a difference a degree makes.  Three years ago, as a freshman at Traverse City Central High School, Jami Chung decided to take a summer math class at NMC in order to enroll in calculus during her sophomore year. Back then, Chung was planning on medical school, so getting a head start on college credits sounded appealing.  Read More
When I first came to Northwestern Michigan College in the fall of 2010, I never imagined I’d be able to make it as far as I have.  After graduating high school with a 1.8 GPA, I enrolled at the behest of my father, a renowned datastician who’d spent over a decade of his life earning various degrees himself.  As for myself, up until my attendance at NMC, I never had much interest in school. Like, at all.  Read More
