March/April 2014

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself, any direction you choose.”
- Dr. Seuss

March 2nd marked what would have been Dr. Seuss’s 110th birthday. I have to imagine that had Dr. Seuss experienced a day in the life of a Carver Center student he would have caught the same energy and enthusiasm from each of them that many of us have captured from his works. Dr. Seuss represents that part of us that feeds our creativity, inquisitiveness, spontaneity, and passion for something we love. When we return from Spring Break on April 22nd, it will be an exciting time to see how the students, staff, and faculty steer themselves towards their end-of-the-year performances and exhibitions.

My best,
Karen Steele

"Theatre that aerobicizes the brain and tickles the heart. Ives is a mordant comic who has put the play back in playwright…A wondrous wordmaster." —Time Magazine. Culinary
For the 7th year in a row the Carver Center Culinary ProStart Management Team took first place in the Maryland ProStart Student Invitational!! Each team member earned $50,000 in scholarships to advance their education upon graduation. The team prepared a 58-page comprehensive business proposal promoting their restaurant concept, a supporting menu, recipe development, costing and a marketing plan.  They prepared a verbal presentation and visual display, which was presented to a panel of judges acting as potential investors.  The team was also tested on their critical thinking skills, by reacting to potential management challenges related to their concept.  The team now advances to the National Competition in Minneapolis, May 2nd - 6th.

Literary Arts
Senior books are coming out! Literary Arts seniors have been hard at work on their senior thesis projects. Students will publish their books during the month of April. A book launch is scheduled for early May! Works include poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. You may pre-order books either from students or on Amazon. Titles include: Letters to a Dead Poet; Truth About Your Neighbors; Passed by Censor; Return of the Exiled; Spoonfed; Little Miss Understanding; The Tinseltown Chronicles; The Way Around; We Are Alive; Laundromat; Just Another Summer to Forget; Quiet Confidence; Heart Sounds; and, Girl Season.

Theatre
The Theatre Department is hard at work, preparing for both our spring production, “The Ramayana,” running May 1-3, and the showcase nights for each grade.  This is a very exciting time of the year for our actors and designers, as many are preparing to show their work for the first or final time at Carver Center in a full production, and others are looking forward to showing their peers, family, and the school the products of all their hard work.

PARCC Field Test

Maryland is a Governing State in the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC), a consortium of 24 states working together to develop an assessment system aligned to the Common Core State Standards. The new assessments will be anchored in college and career readiness; provide comparability across states; and be able to assess and measure higher-order skills such as critical thinking, communications, and problem solving.

The assessments will be computer-based and will include a mix of constructed response items, performance-based tasks, and computer-enhanced, computer-scored items.

PARCC will assist educators in the classroom by providing instructional tools to support implementation, student achievement data, professional development modules, and educator-led training to support "peer-to-peer" training. K-12 educators across the consortium of PARCC states will be involved throughout the development of the PARCC assessments and related instructional and reporting tools to help ensure the assessment system provides the information and resources educators need the most.

The PARCC assessments will be fully implemented in Maryland in 2014-15 academic year. This year two Geometry classes at Carver Center will participate in the PARCC field test on March 25th and 26th. If you have any questions please contact: Carver Center's Assistant Principal for Testing, Sharon Davis at sdavis@bcps.org.

BCPS ONE

BCPS is in the initial phase of implementation of BCPS One.   This program is a key initiative that will provide a fully integrated system that brings together all of the district's programs and initiatives around student data, assessments, curriculum, instruction, reporting, and analysis into a single user-friendly platform.  The system will include data-driven tools that will provide educators at all levels within the district the means to build and extend teacher capacity.  This will be accomplished through personalized learning for all educators by coupling multiple measures of educator development with student performance, then connecting this with the appropriate resources for fostering professional growth.  As part of this comprehensive approach, BCPS One will provide a Web-based communication and collaboration tool or set of tools which will provide a single, unified presence to distribute information and actively engage the community in the instructional process.  Educators will be able to communicate general school or classroom information with peers, leadership, parents, students, and the general community.

BCPS ONE will allow parents and guardians to stay informed and engaged in their child’s education by providing access to grades, transcripts, schedules, attendance, and various other data elements. BCPS ONE will include a new gradebook system. The gradebook system will extend to schools a full-featured grade-keeping application used to record, report, and monitor student performance.

School Counseling Update

Carver Center's school counselors implement a comprehensive counseling program designed to promote students' school success, career decision making skills, and competencies for understanding self and others. The counseling program is aligned with the American School Counseling Association (ASCA). Baltimore County Public Schools is preparing every school counseling program to be RAMP ready. Recognized ASCA Model Program (RAMP) will be a reality in every BCPS school by the 2015-2016 academic year. RAMP recognizes schools that are committed to delivering a comprehensive, data driven school counseling program and an exemplary educational environment.

If you have any questions please contact: Carver Center's School Counseling Department Chairperson, Ms. Martin

S.T.A.T. - The Move to Digital Learning

What is S.T.A.T.? Students & Teachers Accessing Tomorrow - is a fundamental shift in teaching and learning to meet BCPS's Theory of Action: To equip every student with the critical 21st century skills
needed to be globally competitive, BCPS must ensure that every school has an equitable, effective digital learning environment. All students will have access to a digital learning device and
personalized, blended, interactive curriculum.

Why is it called S.T.A.T.? In November, a committee of students  - including two Carver Center students - met to begin brainstorming a name and look for the new initiative. Committee
members said they like the connotation of “Stat" as it is used in medical professions, meaning immediate and quick. The title captures both the urgency and the importance of the work the system is undertaking.

What devices will teachers and students receive? Decisions regarding device features are being made with input from Curriculum and Instruction and Department of Technology leaders, steering committee members, and teacher and student focus groups. An RFP is now out for the devices. The RFP stipulates tablets with laptop functionality, K–12. Student devices will be specially imaged to include security features. Teacher devices will be the same as or compatible with student devices. Each school will be equipped with replacement devices and the ability to charge devices.

When will teachers receive their devices? All teachers in the district will be receiving new devices by the end of the 2013–2014 school year, pending funding.

Early Dismissal Reminder

When students need to leave school early for any reason, they will be allowed to do so only with those adults whose names appear on the emergency card.  Students are requested to bring to the office upon arrival to school on the morning of dismissal a note which includes:
  • Where the student is going
  • Who will pick up the student
  • What time the student is leaving and returning
  • A phone number where a parent can be reached to verify the early dismissal.
  • No student will be dismissed early without verification of the dismissal note.

Bringing a note to school on the morning of dismissal precludes the need to interrupt classroom instruction. Early dismissal before 10:30 a.m. (with the student's missing the rest of the day) will be counted as an absence for that school day though the student will be counted as present in the individual class(es) he/ she attended before the early dismissal.  Students must sign out in the main office before leaving school.

Carver Center Foundation Carpool Program

This year the Carver Center Foundation has partnered with Carpoolworld, a hosted solution, to provide a free carpool matching service for Carver Center students. Visit http://carvercenterfoundation.com/carpool-program/ for more information on accessing the site.

Demolition and Construction

Demolition remains on schedule! The parking lot has gone and visible changes are beginning to occur on the main building. If you look closely at the pictures on the GWCCAT Twitter feed you can see one of the former lives of the building - one of it's former names - Towsontown Junior High School - carved over the main entrance.

With demolition and construction occurring to make way for the new Carver Center athletic fields, it is especially important this year that all Carver Center students leave campus at dismissal time (by 2:45 p.m.) unless they are involved in after-school activities under the direct supervision of a Carver Center faculty member. Parents/guardians who provide transportation for their students are expected to pick up students at dismissal time or at the conclusion of the school-sponsored activity.

Volunteering Update

Volunteer orientation now available online
Mandatory session now more easily accessible

The brief orientation that individuals must complete to become Baltimore County Public Schools volunteers is now available online at http://bit.ly/1hC7J1w.

Each year, more than 20,000 parents and family and community members volunteer their knowledge, skills and time to BCPS. They contribute to students’ academic progress in a number of ways, from assisting in cafeterias and libraries to accompanying students on field trips and organizing special events and projects.
To ensure the safety of BCPS students, parents and others interesting in volunteering in county schools must complete an annual application process and participate in a brief orientation. This orientation covers topics such as volunteer expectations and guidelines, school safety and security and important information regarding BCPS policies and procedures.

While most schools hold in-person orientations near the beginning of each school year, the new online training makes the sessions available year-round and at a potential volunteer’s convenience. At the end of the online orientation, certificates can be printed to document completion.

This online school volunteer training was developed through a partnership between the BCPS Office of Family and Community Engagement and SafeSchools.com.

In Focus...

Each month we'd like to introduce a member of the Carver Center Teaching Community.  To share a little about  who they are in Life and the creative passions that they pursue.  We are endowed with so many talented faculty members--  their creative passions inform their teaching and help create the magic that is Carver Center.

Paige Schweitzer
English Department
Chair and Instructor

Your creative passions--
I enjoy taking artistic photographs beyond the everyday photography, but unfortunately I do not allow myself more time and freedom to further that passion as much as I would like.  Although not creative in the conventional sense, I enjoy presenting various professional development topics for teachers on a local and national level.

I would like to think that sharing my best practices not only with my colleagues, but also with my students has a solid impact on their learning, and that it makes both teachers and students open to different ways to digest new material.  My students inspire me every day through the insightful comments they raise during discussions, and through the ways they look at the world.

My words of wisdom to my students and colleagues are that you have to be passionate about what you do, whether that be something artistic, an occupation, or simply your beliefs.  This will not only provide a natural drive to wake up everyday and do something you love, but it will also provide purpose in your life.
