Flooding in the Limpopo River basin“We are going to win this struggle. Whenever a struggle is involved in a choice between what is right and what is wrong, the outcome is inevitable.” With these words former vice-president Al Gore introduced day 2 of the Climate Leadership Corps training, which I was lucky enough to attend. We had all seen his film The Inconvenient Truth, and over the past few years Mr. Gore had gathered around 450 000 slides of the destruction of our planet due to daily extreme weather events.

Armed guards on patrol 24/7 at rhino sanctuary


rhino sanctuary-1The illegal wildlife trade has reached “devastating” levels with armed guards now forced to keep round-the-clock patrols to protect endangered species. The far east is no longer the sole focus of the fight against illegal ivory, with experts warning that the UK is increasingly becoming a “major hub” for the contraband. Around 36,000 elephants are believed to be killed each year while demand for rhinos and other animals for traditional medicines is increasing.

Tragic costs after Limpopo floods


Limpopo floods2The Bele Bele municipality in Limpopo is in the process of determining the costs after the province experienced severe rains. Most of the damage affected the Klein Kariba holiday venue and the SABC reported that an elderly couple was swept away and subsequently drowned. Several houses and the city's industrial sector were also severely affected.

Scientists sound alarm on climate


California droughtEarly in his career, a scientist named Mario J. Molina was pulled into seemingly obscure research about strange chemicals being spewed into the atmosphere. Within a year, he had helped discover a global environmental emergency, work that would ultimately win a Nobel Prize. Now, at 70, Dr. Molina is trying to awaken the public to an even bigger risk.

Deadly winter storm batters America’s East Coast


Deadly-storm-in-the-USA deadly winter storm has hit the East Coast of America causing freezing temperatures and huge transport problems. Freezing rain and near-record cold temperatures have also caused about 2,700 flights to be cancelled and schools and local government offices to close. The US capital of Washington has been severely affected with about 4 inches of snow falling.

1 300 rescued from floods in Limpopo


Limpopo floodsAbout 1 300 people have been rescued across Limpopo this week due to extensive flooding, the provincial government said on Friday. 700 Families have been assisted, of which 177 are from Lephalale. Motorists are urged to avoid using any roads leading to Lephalale, and the R101 from Bela-Bela to Mookgopong after a burst dam.

State of emergency declared in flooded Marshall Islands


majuro-flood-1A state of emergency has been declared in the Marshall Islands following severe floods that have swamped the low lying atolls. Almost a thousand people have been displaced in the capital of Majuro, with another 246 evacuated in the separate island of Arno, according to UN figures. Four evacuation centres have been set up in schools and churches in Majuro.
