Everyone’s Reading with Chris Bohjalian

This year marks the thirteenth annual “Everyone’s Reading” community event. The selection for this year is Before You Know Kindness by Chris Bohjalian. This book explores the ties that bind a family together and how each member responds to a traumatic event that shakes the family to its core. In conjunction with this, there will be several opportunities to meet the author and discuss the book. Check the program calendar or stop by the reference desk for more information.

April is National Poetry Month

Sponsored by the Academy of American Poets, during the month of April, we take the time to honor some of the greatest writers and poets through history. We often overlook these folks in favor of their novel-writing brethren, though we should remember that there are many distinct styles and voices in poetry writing that have been some of the most influential writings in the nation and world. Check out poetry by Maya Angelou, Emily Dickinson, and Shel Silverstein or browse through our poetry collection today!

Beatles Take Over U.S. Music Charts: 50th Anniversary

The British Invasion bowled over the U. S. music charts on April 4, 1964. Beatlemania swept the nation as the Beatles held the top five spots on the Billboard Hot 100. With their first appearances in the U. S. barely two months earlier, the songs that topped the charts in order were: “Can’t Buy Me Love”, “Twist and Shout”, “She Loves You”, “I Want to Hold Your Hand”, and “Please, Please Me.” Check out our variety of books on the Beatles in addition to one of their albums at the library.

Tom Clancy’s Birth Anniversary

Though recently deceased, this month we celebrate the birth of critically-acclaimed and national bestselling author Tom Clancy. Clancy was born April 12, 1947 in Baltimore, Maryland. The author wrote seventeen bestsellers, including many that featured his most well-known character Jack Ryan such as The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, and The Sum of All Fears. Tom Clancy focused his novels on highly-detailed espionage and military service storylines, which were praised for their technical accuracy in regards to various branches of the military. With over one hundred million copies sold, Clancy is one of, if not the most read, military espionage authors of our time.
