Outdoor fun and other extravaganzas

While I'm in the middle of 'moving house' (Vienna Unwrapped is being completely redesigned as we speak), local cafetiers shuffle their outdoor furniture to sidewalks, boat operators get their vessels shipshape, and bike tour guides pump up bicycle tubes.

You will also notice that it gets easier to book guided tours, as many tour operators have woken from hibernation.

Things To Do In April

Who ever said the Danube was blue? While its colour won't remind you of Mauritius, it is extremely pleasant in its own right. From April, most boat operators start the boat trips season. My favourites: A Wachau boat trip, and a mini Danube cruise from Vienna to Bratislava.

When I lived in Vienna, I went by bike almost anywhere. There are loads of bike paths, and you can visit all major sites in one go. From April, the main guided bike tour operators will open the season with a classic Vienna bike tour, and a cultural Danube tour. If that's too boring for you, go on a city segway tour (I did it, really cool.)

I love travelling across Austria from April onwards (unless I go skiing). Nothing beats a spring week end in Salzburg (see photo), or a tour through the Vienna Woods and Wachau Valley. If you are based in Vienna, you can do these 5 easy trips in a day each.

From late March, the Vienna State Opera transmits live operas on an LCD screen outside the building, for free. Make sure you wear a warm coat when watching Opera Live On The Square in April, alternatively consider a snug seat inside. (Here is how I saved money buying tickets.)
