Coir: seeking more reliable control of water content

Leading supplier Botanicoir believes that better control of water content will improve the balance between generative and vegetative growth. If moisture sensors aren't always reliable in coir, is there a better way?

Thermal Screens. Can you use them more during the day?

In pursuit of ever more ambitious energy targets, Dutch growers are pushing the boundaries of screen deployment. Can the UK do the same?

New options for substrate control

Irrigation for substrates has been much in the news lately, with leading industry advisers agreeing that better irrigation management gets results. And what's more, the principles of better irrigation management apply to all substrates, so whether you grow in rockwool or coir, there may be something to gain by having a look at your irrigation control. Ensuring that the water content is right is a key factor, as getting that wrong may lead to an imbalance between generative and vegetative growth, according to the substrate gurus. Given the well known issues with moisture sensors, especially in respect of coir, are there better options? More here

Screens & the 'New Way of Growing'

The Dutch government has decreed that new glasshouses should be 'climate-neutral' and existing glasshouses must reduce their energy use by 50% by 2020. Progress is already being made in Holland, so the pressure for UK growers to keep up will be considerable. GrowSave have organised a training event about the 'New Way of Growing' which will take place on April 30th. If you'd like to go, you can register here.
One of the energy saving measures becoming increasingly popular in Hollad is to utilise thermal screens for longer, including more daytime use.

New super transparent screen materials as shown above now make it possible to deploy screens in the daytime without decreasing yield. Last year CMW organised a seminar on the subject. If you missed the original report on that, you can read about it here or for more information give us a call: 01430 422222.
