Research explores ways to link community expertise and health professional education

Community Voices in Health Professional Education (CVHEd) is a 3-year Vancouver Foundation funded project to improve care for vulnerable populations through their participation in the education of health professionals at UBC. Aphasia Mentoring Program

Since 2010, UBC's Dr. Barbara Purves in the School of Audiology and Speech Sciences has been facilitating a group in which community members work with health care students to enrich the student and patient care experiences. The community members, who are known as aphasia mentors, are living with aphasia, a communication disorder that most commonly results from stroke.

The aphasia mentors present to various groups of students, participate in university research, and attend an annual interdisciplinary aphasia camp for students, people with aphasia, and caregivers. Priority is placed on teaching future health professionals about aphasia, including how to be an effective communication partner with people with aphasia.

UBC Interprofessional Health Mentors program

"The UBC medical students from the mentorship program were such a hit"

A presentation about the Health Mentors program by Angela Towle, with Anna, Deepak (students), Paul and Kent (mentors) proved to be a fitting conclusion to the Patient Experience West Conference in Vancouver on March 13. Conference delegates, including leaders from our local health authorities, were so enthusiastic about how the program is preparing the future workforce to deliver patient-centred care that they asked if they could come to the symposium to find out more….

3rd Annual Health Mentors Symposium
Check out what health professional students have been learning from people living with chronic or disabling conditions and learn about this remarkable learning experience.The event will include poster-board displays by each of the 50 groups and you will be able to talk with students and mentors about their experiences in the program. Space is limited and registration is required.

UBC Division of Health Care Communication to host visit from NHS Leadership Academy

Dr. Clare Price-Dowd, Program Lead with the NHS Leadership Academy in the UK is headed to Vancouver to learn how UBC's Division of Health Care Communication involves patients in health professional education.

"We need to learn so much more about how to do this with integrity and safety," says Dr. Price-Dowd who is leading a program to educate 20,000 health care staff in the UK over the next 2-3 years.

Dr. Price-Dowd learned of the Division's work to involve patients in education through the Patients as Educators Research Collaborative and Health Foundation report. She will be meeting with members of the Division of Health Care Communication, patient educators, community partners, mentors and students during her visit to UBC April 12-25.

 

6th Annual Allies in Health: Patient & Community Fair for Health Professional Education

2014 Fair Planning Committee members needed!

The Allies in Health Fair is an annual, one-day interprofessional event that connects community-based organizations, patient support groups and individuals involved in these agencies with students and faculty at UBC. It is part of UBC’s Celebrate Learning Week, held annually in late October. The Fair recognizes the unique expertise and role of people in the community in the education of health professionals and promotes meaningful partnerships between UBC and the communities it serves.

Members of the planning committee:

• Attend up to three planning meetings between June-November (2 hours each)
• Guide the planning and implementation of the Fair
• Collaborate on funding applications and other fundraising efforts
