This Week At King's. March 17th-13rd 2014. Here we go!

THIS WEEK AT KING'S
March 17th-23rd, 2014

Well, here I am. Setting a record for the latest I have ever finished a TWAK, but also for the earliest I have ever finished one, so I have that going for me (WHICH IS NICE. REDDIT GET OUT OF MY HEAD). As I knew would happen, everything witty I had planned to say here now escapes me (seriously I had loads of things). If you have a minute (and who doesn’t at 2:30am) you should watch Jiro Dreams of Sushi. Especially if you have a newsletter to write. Nothing keeps work at bay like a hunger-inducing movie with calming music and subtitles. Mmm, mmm, mmm. Shout out to the mouse that has now twice scurried across my res room floor, thanks for keeping me completely, carefully, awake. ALSO shout out to Haydn! What a guy. I have one high bar to do whatever I’m supposed to metaphorically do with the bar in that saying.......... Maybe if I figure it out I’ll have time to go take archery lessons with the two arrows I found on the ground today. In the meantime they can protect me from this mouse and the rest of his mouse family that I’m sure is living in my dresser. I can’t wait to get rid of it and redecorate in a new room. (Not the kind of redecorating I did to Haydn’s couch this weekend, the fun kind.) That about wraps it up so I’ll say goodnight for now (I can do that whenever I want because we don’t live under feudalism – you’re welcome Zac).

J

P.S. What’s with everyone not getting TWAK? A dozen people told me this week that they aren’t subscribed and don’t know how to be. Forward this to your friends! Also check out the snazzy new signup link on our Facebook page.

Emma’s Weather Corner

“I'm Emma Steen and I will be writing your weather. I spend most of my time taking buzzfeed quizzes. If you ever want to find out what bagel you are, I have a link for that.” – said Emma Steen, a proud Kingsian and regular reader of the weekly weather, who graciously put together this detailed and emotional forecast. Look out for a more in-depth and personal account of what it is like to be her in an upcoming TWAK.
MONDAY – Partly Cloudy. Not too cold, not too nice. You'll figure it out.
TUESDAY – Sun! Soak up the rays with this sweet sweet 1 degree weather.
WEDNESDAY – Partly cloudy again, HOWEVER, high of 4 you guys. I like where this week is going.
THURSDAY – High of 11, chance of rain. This day could be awesome.
FRIDAY – Mostly Cloudy and high of 10. I am all about this life.
SATURDAY – Mostly Cloudy, high of 9. Not very original.
SUNDAY – Partly Cloudy and getting colder. This day sux with a high of 5 and a low of -5. Get yourself together.

The KSU is hiring again! We're on the lookout for a Council Chair, a Scribe, a CUBE Coordinator, a Chief Returning Officer, a Campus Safety Coordinator, a Sustainability Officer, and three Frosh Week Coordinators. Phew! What a long list. But wait - there's nore!! We're also striking search committees for each of these positions at Council this weekend. If you'd like to help screen and select applicants for the above positions, come on out to Council at 9AM on Sunday in the Boardroom, or drop me a line at cvp@ksu.ca if you can't make it and would like someone to speak for you. To apply for one of the positions, send your resume and cover letter to cvp@ksu.ca or drop them off in the KSU office by March 28. Questions? Hit up cvp@ksu.ca. Is it starting to sound like I'm just plugging for my own email address? I'm happy to hear your complaints at cvp@ksu.ca.

THE START FESTIVAL – THURSDAY MARCH 20th AND BEYOND @ THE BUS STOP THEATRE
At last, it begins! The StART Festival is an interdisciplinary festival of original performances and art pieces by post secondary students in Halifax and it’ going to be freaking rad. It’s produced by two of King’s’ very own: Karen Gross and Alanna Griffin. Thursday night is a pop-up career fair, and Friday and Saturday will see (King’s!) students performing live. See the weekly schedule for more sweet deets.

THE MIND BALL - SATURDAY MARCH 29th AT THE LORD NELSON
Members of the King’s community will be hosting a super rad semi-formal ball for youth mental health on March 29th at the Lord Nelson. There’s going to be DJs, lights, drinks, a photo booth, a candy bar, a late night snack station, and the chance to win huge prizes. Good news… it is a wet/dry event, so our 19 and under friends can attend too! Tickets are $20, with all proceeds going to Moving Minds - an entirely youth led not-for-profit dedicated to changing the culture surrounding youth mental health in Halifax. This sounds like some great fun. Can we just crash at the Lord Nelson that night and then all of the stranded res students can let us in for breakfast? Yes we can! See you there.

A FRIENDLY REMINDER FROM THE REGISTRAR’S OFFICE
COURSE REGISTRATION IS EVEN CLOSER THAN IT WAS LAST WEEK AND I STILL DON’T HAVE A CLUE WHAT TO SIGN UP FOR SO I TOO FEEL THE NEED TO YELL. COURSE CALENDARS ARE NOW ONLINE AND REGISTRATION WILL OPEN ON MARCH 18TH FOR JOURNALISM STUDENTS AND MARCH 19TH FOR ARTS/SCIENCE STUDENTS. IF YOU HAVE ANY ISSUES, YOU SHOULD REALLY EMAIL TERRA.BRUHM@UKINGS.CA OR KATE.STRAPPS@UKINGS.CA. BUT PROBABLY DON’T SEND THEIR EMAIL IN ALL CAPS BECAUSE 1) IT MIGHT NOT WORK AND 2) YOU MIGHT COME OFF AS SEEMING ANGRY. ALSO HEADS UP THAT ON THE 19TH REGISTRATION STARTS AT 3 DIFFERENT TIMES, HEAD OVER TO DAL ONLINE TO CHECK WHEN YOU CAN BEGIN.

THERE’S STILL TIME TO TAKE PART IN THE THIRD ANNUAL KING’S SQUASH TOURNEY
If you haven’t noticed this announcement by now, there’s really not much I can do for you other than repeat again: for its fourth fifth time in TWAK, the King's Squash Society is hosting its third annual squash tournament for players of a variety of levels on March 29th and 30th. Do pumpkin and squash taste different? In fact they do. I have eaten both, and they are quite distinct. Which do I prefer? Good question. It entirely depends. (Now isn’t that cryptic.) If you just want to play squash in the King’s squash tourney, please send the Squash society an email at kings.squashed@gmail.com.

APPLY FOR POWERSHIFT!
Get those gears in motion! PowerShift, a massive conference on climate justice, is coming to Halifax from March 28-31 2014. Hundreds of students from across Atlantic Canada and the rest of the country will be gathering at Dalhousie for the conference and we want you to be there with ‘em at an extremely subsidized cost. How do I do that, you ask? It’s as simple as this, I reply. Come on in to the KSU Office and bring $35 cash or cheque. And then my friends, you are off to the races.

KING’S CHORUS: EARTH MASS – SUNDAY, MARCH 23rd
Oops! Looks like I missed this one and put into the event calendar as well! Oh well, DOUBLE THE MASS!!.... Ever wanted to hear a beluga whale sing? Owls hoot? A chimpanzee gargle? The King’s Chorus will provide you with just that (alright maybe not the owls and chimpanzee parts, but SERIOUSLY WHALE NOISES WILL BE FEATURED), at their upcoming concert, Missa Gaia/Earth Mass. There’s going to be an 8 piece band and special guest star gospel singer Theresa Thomason (this girl can whail!). Tickets are on sale in the Bookstore and are only $10 for students. This is basically Michael Jackson’s Earth Song, except composed by Paul Halley.

KING’S CHAPEL CHOIR: BACH’S ST. MATTHEW PASSION  – SUNDAY, APRIL 6th
Double choir, double orchestra, double double. What? The Chapel Choir will be putting on a spectacular performance of Bach in the Cathedral Church of All Saints. Tixs are 15 bones for students, both available in the Bookstore and online.

THE KTS PRESENTS: MELANCHOLY PLAY
A Contemporary Farce, by Sarah Ruhl
Hello fans of the KTS! (That should be all of you.) Cutting to the chase, THE PIT RETURNS!! Or for some of us (read: all first years, including me!) THE PIT OPENS FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER! I can’t tell you how excited I am. This week’s play is comical and self-aware, explores the allure and tragedy of melancholia, and simultaneously participates in and lampoons classical melodrama. Sounds rad. It runs at 8PM this Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and DID I MENTION IT’S IN THE PIT. Reservations are open right over here. Remaining tickets will be sold starting when the box office opens at 7PM in the A&A lobby each night. The price is $5 for students, and $10 for non-students. This play also features live cello by Eliza Niemi (she’s on the right in this charming little vid), and contains almonds, so people-with-nut-allergies beware. See you all IN THE PIT!

THURSDAY, MARCH 20th

KING’S PRIDE PRESENTS: DRAG BALL DANCE PARTY
Wardroom, 8PM
Comb out your wigs and try on your heels indeed. This dragtastic night of “genderbending, drag queens, drag kings, and everything in between” will be a party like no other. Karaoke hour is 10-11PM (a.k.a. my “fresh air” break (karaoke is NOT my thing)) so bust out your singing voices along with those heels. For pictures and more check out the facebook event.

THE START FESTIVAL PRESENTS: FAIR STARTS IN THE ARTS
Bus Stop Theatre, 8PM
What a clever name for an event. It’s all tru tho. This eve is a pop-up career fair for emerging artists in Halifax. There will be representatives from a variety of organizations that support and represent local artists. There will also be snacks (thank goodness – I was getting worried) a cash bar, and a photographer on hand to take affordable headshots. Admission is free! Yippee!

FRIDAY, MARCH 21st

JOURNALISM: REINVENTED
KTS Red Room, 7PM
Michael De Monte (co-founder of ScribbleLive, an awesome online media company that’s used by journalists and brands around the world, and also employs journalists, including King’s grads, and which has an addictively smooth-moving website which I would love to get lost in for hours and hours), King’s graduate and all-around swell guy, will be lecturing about how journalists can capitalize on their skills. HAYDN CHECK THIS OUT IT’S RIGHT UP YOUR ALLY. This talk is part of the “Journalism in the Public Square” lecture series collaborated on by the King’s School of Journalism and the King’s Centre for Interdisciplinary Research. Both those groups should acronymize their names before someone gets their tongue tied in a knot.

THE UKC BLUE DEVILS AND THE KSU PRESENT: COUNTRY NIGHT
Wardroom, 8PM
FINALLY. The Blue Devils have completed competing for the year, and it’s clearly time to celebrate. The facebook promises that this party will be the biggest thing since Dolly Parton’s hair. Count me in. The Wardy will be serving specialty drinks names after King’s athletes, and there will be Blue Devils ‘swag’ being given out all night. Yeeehaw!

THE START FESTIVAL FRIDAY NIGHT PERFORMANCES
Bus Stop Theatre, 8PM
The star time for this event is deceptive. In fact, plan to show up before 8PM to start enjoying the art being displayed in the lobby. Then, start to engage with some poetry, dance, film, music, theatre, visual art, installation art, and more. Featured King’s students include, for a start: poet Maya Path, director Amy Hurley, composers Thomas Hoy and Claire Ahern, and installation artist Laura Gallagher Doucette. Admission starts at $10 (and stays there, I had to get the word start in again, whatcanyado).

SUNDAY, MARCH 23rd

THE KING’S CHORUS PERFORMS MISSA GAIA / EARTH MASS
First Baptist Church, 1300 Oxford St, 5PM
I didn’t even realize just how awesome this is going to be until I read the facebook event. Is it ever going to be awesome. Our very own Nick Halley directs, and concert will feature the King’s Chorus, the Capella Regalis Men and Boys choirs, an 8-piece band, and American gospel singer Theresa Thomason. Both ecumenical and ecological (cool words folks, I don’t know about you but I would go just because they used the word ecumenical) this Mass embraces all life on Earth.

VICTUALS GLORIOUS VICTUALS: Your guide to free food & drink on campus

TUESDAY: Alas, like Haydn I too have never been to St. Andrew’s United Church. But I did just Google it, so now I know exactly where it is (Coburg and Robie – so close!) so I will have to frequent it soon. They serve free student dinners at 5:30PM. The loaded ladle is a-happening today as well! They’ll be serving delicious (FREE!) vegan lunches starting at 1PM until the food runs out. Yummm.

WEDNESDAY: Nothing to see here, friends. Wait, yes there is – MORE LOADED LADLE. Same deal, serving at 1PM onwards. Come get your vegan on.

THURSDAY: Yes! You guessed it, the Ladle is back for a third time in one week. How do they do it? Must be that vegan magic. Head over to the SUB at 1PM to get some for yourself.
If you'd like to see your announcement in next week's TWAK then make sure to send your event to cvp@ksu.ca by 11:59PM on March 22nd 2014.
