Lesson 199: Guarding Our Emotions
God most often appeals to us through our reason; Satan usually appeals to our desires.
When Satan tempted Eve, he first attacked her reason by casting doubt on God. Gen.3:1-6
But that was a smoke screen, a diversion to confuse her so that he could conquer her desires.
She saw that the tree was good to eat, a delight to the eyes, and desirable. 1 John 2:16
How do we prevent sin from attacking our desires? On defense, we flee. 2 Tim.2:22 On the offensive, we set our hearts to delight on spiritual values. Col.3:1; Psa.1:2
As shown in the picture above, like Peter and John on the first Easter morning (John 20:3-4) we must run to the risen Christ.
Psa.40:8 I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart.
Our reason, will and emotions should work, in that sequence. But we often reverse the order.
Our desires should not be driving the bus. We have to work at directing them toward God.
The Bible is filled with “success stories” of real people who trusted God and were blessed. Hebrews 11, the “Hall of Faith”, lists a small sample. Their lives can motivate us.

About This Series
The goal of this series is to become more useful in serving the Lord Jesus Christ, as an instrument in the Redeemer's hand. The theme verses for the series are Ephesians 4:22-24, Philemon 11, 2 Timothy 2:21
- to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds,
- and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
- Formerly he was useless to you, but now he is indeed useful to you and to me.
- Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, ready for every good work.
