Thank you...

Dear friend of Sight For All,

I hope you've enjoyed a safe and happy start to 2014. Firstly, I must express an enormous thanks to all of you who attended the Sculpture For Sight fundraiser in December. We were blown away by the generosity and goodwill shown by those who supported the event. We are proud to let you know that we raised a phenomenal $120,000 thanks to our fabulous corporate and in-kind sponsors and to sales of sculptures and raffle tickets. I’ve had great feedback and have repeatedly heard it was our best event ever – the amazing sculptures, the picturesque grounds of St Mark’s College, the live music, the atmosphere and the plentiful array of superb food and Coonawarra wines made it a night to remember.

The money raised will help us complete our objective to equip a further five regional eye centres and reduce the enormous burden of cataract blindness in Myanmar. The new equipment and specialised training will allow the local eye surgeons to markedly increase the number of cataract operations they can perform each year. Just last month we had an Australian ophthalmologist in Central Myanmar installing new equipment and providing training in three centres. It is through the success of Sculpture For Sight and its supporters that we are making a deep and long-lasting impact in one of the poorest countries in the world.

We cannot forget to mention the large team of volunteers who helped make the event a success: senior school students from Pembroke School, Seymour College, Walford School, Wilderness School, Prince Alfred College and St Peters College; medical students; doctors; friends of Sight For All and all our other dedicated volunteers. A special thank you must go to our Events Committee who worked tirelessly to bring you Sculpture For Sight.

Many of our programs wouldn’t be possible without the help and generosity of people like you – so I’d like to take this opportunity to say thank you for your continued support. I look forward to sharing with you Sight For All’s journey in 2014.

Please Don't Rush

Urtext Films have produced a documentary of Sight For All's childhood blindness survey in Lao in 2013. Principals Matt Salleh and Rosie Tucker travelled with the ophthalmic team to Vientiane where they experienced the harsh realities of an eye clinic in Laos's largest School for the Blind.

The resulting short film 'Please Don't Rush' captures the struggle facing many children in developing countries. The Film premiered at the Byron Bay Film Festival this month followed by a screening at DocWeek during the Adelaide Festival. It has just made selection at one of Australia's largest short film festivals, the St Kilda Film Festival coming up in May. We can't wait to share this heart felt piece with you all in the near future.

Our fellows from Myanmar

Dr Khine Su (right) is returning to Yangon Eye Hospital in May following a year of training in ophthalmic plastic surgery at Royal Adelaide Hospital and Women's and Children's Hospital. Khine will be the leading oculoplastics specialist in her country, where she will use her skills and knowledge to treat patients and share the newly acquired expertise with her own colleagues.

Sight For All welcomes Dr May Ko Ko Thet (left), an ophthalmologist from Myanmar who has recently commenced a training fellowship in the treatment of glaucoma, the world's leading cause of preventable blindness. Glaucoma specialists from Royal Adelaide Hospital and Flinders Medical Centre will share their expertise with May over the coming year.

Thank you to the Australian Government who have helped to sponsor these important sustainable initiatives.
