Facts about nigeria.ng, games.ng domains

It has become imperative that I share some of these facts and nothing with the facts on the burgeoning Nigeria.ng and Games.ng domains, which most of us are aware have been issues of controversy for some times in the public eyes.

One thing the NiRA management team under my wish has been doing is to ensure fairness in our dealings with every registrant with the firm support of the Board of Trustees.

Of recent, the Internet is filled with electronic mails (e-mails) and blog postings by a domain speculator also known among Nigerians as ‘chinaman’ who has been blackmailing the Executive Board of the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NIRA), the President and Vice President of the Association in their official and private capacity, as well as some Registrars who disagree with him on the matter.

Particularly, he claimed the ownership of domains: games.ng and nigeria.ng. and being a responsible organization that was formed for the benefit and advancement of the Nigerian people,  as well as charged with the management and popularization of the .ng Top Level Domain (TLD) on the Internet, NIRA Board made attempts to bend beyond normal, even in the face of blackmail and intimidation.

Having made every effort to resolve the matter in an amicable manner, including an overture in the week of 23rd February 2014 to 3rd March 2014, all the past and recent overtures were roundly rebuffed by the speculator.

After a meeting of the Board of Trustees of NIRA, where these facts were made open, the Trustees expressed satisfaction with the way the Executives have handled the matter, requested that no form of compensation should be given, and that these facts be made public in the interest of the nation and NIRA's image in particular.

Therefore, NIRA has made the facts available with respect to the two transactions in contention; games.ng and nigeria.ng.

We make bold to provide you our dear members the summary.

Yours Sincerely,
Mrs. Mary Nma Uduma
NIRA President

CTO endorses CyberGovernance Model

The fourth Commonwealth Cybersecurity Forum ended in London last weekend with the adoption of Commonwealth Cybergovernance Model, which is seen as significant step in helping to reach global consensus for a more secure and safe cyberspace.

Adopted by the Commonwealth ICT Ministers at their first biennial meeting, the cybergovernance model presented to the wider ICT community at the London forum by the Honourable Phillip Paulwell, Minister of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining of Jamaica, established four key principles that Commonwealth countries will use for guidance in the governance of cyberspace.

These include "We contribute to a safe and an effective global Cyberspace; Our actions in Cyberspace support broader economic and social development; We act individually and collectively to tackle cybercrime; and We each exercise our rights and meet our responsibilities in Cyberspace.”

Introduced in 2010, recalls that the CTO's annual Commonwealth Cybersecurity Forum has become the key Commonwealth event to exchange ideas, share knowledge and build relationships to improve the safety, security and resilience of cyberspace.

ITU celebrates women’s change through ICTs

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) joined the world to celebrate the power of digital literacy towards changing women’s lives as it reaches target of ‘one million women trained worldwide’.

This year, ITU commemorated the International Women’s Day with theme: ‘Progress for all’ through ICTs.

Notable is that over one million disadvantaged women in 79 countries around the world are now benefiting from newly-acquired information and communication technology (ICT) skills thanks to a partnership between ITU, the UN specialized agency for ICTs, and some non-governmental organisation.

Also reports has that the Women’s Digital Literacy Campaign, launched in 2011 with a target of training one million women around the world, leveraged the combined reach of Telecentre.org Foundation’s global network of 100,000 telecentres worldwide and ITU’s 193 Member States and 700 private sector members.

The campaign reached its goal earlier this month with a total of 1,014,096 women trained in basic computer skills, through the efforts of 153 participating organizations and 20,000 telecentres around the world.
