5 ERP Blunders (and How to Avoid Them)

The sheer complexity of implementing an ERP system means that there are many opportunities for error; avoiding the common mistakes is key to ensuring a successful implementation. Here’s what to consider:
  1. ERP Apprehension – No matter how smooth your implementation, it all comes down to your users and how comfortable they are with the system. A thorough training program goes a long way.
  2. Manpower Needs – ERP systems require manpower for ongoing management, underestimating those needs can lead to frustration as well as affecting customers.
  3. Unrealistic Expectations – Setting a “go-live” date is all well and good, but things happen. Ensure your project is fully (and reasonably) thought out and planned before setting the date in stone.
  4. Going “Big” – Making a huge initial investment to complete an entire ERP transformation may seem like a great plan, but it’s also a huge drain on resources and comes with a significant learning curve. Small changes, over a few years, are more advisable.
  5. Generic Solutions – Although a more affordable option, generic solutions are not always a good fit; customization can help make your ERP system a better fit.

I often get asked about performance issues with SQL Server. I often find with a quick check that the data and log files for the database are being stored in terribly inefficient ways. I am not going to argue local disks versus SAN storage in this post, as more often than not my clients are moving to virtualized environments so the storage is on a SAN or on a centralized disk array of some sort. Read more

Message from Wade:

It's been another productive month here at The Smart Panda! The team is growing and we've added another hosting client. Along with an infrastructure review, some new lead work for a HR/CS split, and finishing up a Finance 8.9 to 9.2 upgrade, things are hopping.

It would appear that the blog post regarding O-SES resonated with many folks out there, so I am posting a follow-up post regarding some troubleshooting tips we have found!
