BASIS Science Founder Nadeem Kassam Joins StartUp Health
as First ‘Healthcare Transformer in Residence’

New York, NY - April 8, 2014 - StartUp Health, a global startup platform accelerating innovation in health and wellness, today announced the addition of 16 new companies to its StartUp Health Academy, a long-term entrepreneurship program and community designed to help scale early-stage digital health companies. To date, 63 companies have joined StartUp Health, three of which have been acquired, and the program's portfolio has raised a total of $130 million.

Thousands of startups that share a common goal of transforming health and wellness have applied to the StartUp Health Academy. Each quarter, it invites fewer than 20 companies to join its comprehensive three-year entrepreneurship program. These companies are led by some of the best and brightest serial entrepreneurs, doctors, technologists and trained scientists. Selected companies become part of a close community of “Healthcare Transformers” and participate in a long-term coaching program focused on scaling their businesses, leadership development and providing access to investors, customers, talent and partners who are committed to healthcare innovation.

“We are entering a great period of transformation, where all aspects of our health and wellness are being reimagined by inspiring and passionate entrepreneurs from around the world,” said Jerry Levin, Chairman of StartUp Health. “StartUp Health’s growing family of Healthcare Transformers represents the beginning of what’s possible when entrepreneurs lead the way and it signals the remarkable potential for cross-pollination between innovators in different countries.”

Today, StartUp Health also announced that Nadeem Kassam, a member of StartUp Health’s inaugural class and the founder of BASIS Science, which was recently acquired by Intel, will join StartUp Health as its first “Healthcare Transformer in Residence.” His focus will be helping the current community of Startup Health companies and scouting the ecosystem for new startups.

“To be surrounded by such an extraordinary network of entrepreneurs and innovators and have an ongoing support infrastructure to navigate challenges has been invaluable. I am honored to coach this amazing group of Healthcare Transformers and help StartUp Health continue to find the next generation of innovators,” Kassam said.

This week, StartUp Health will host its quarterly Healthcare Transformer Summit in New York City and showcase its companies to some of the tech industry’s biggest brands, including Google, Facebook, Twitter, and Yahoo!, as well as nearly 300 health-focused investors, healthcare brands and strategic partners.
