President's Updates
Dear TACL,
I’m happy to present the 1st Quarterly TACL Newsletter. A lot of effort and time went into developing this from the National Board, specifically by Kelly Shih, Tiffany Cheng, and Jacqui Wu, so please give them a shout-out when you see them.
As we were planning the 2014 Mid-Term Conference in Las Vegas, we happened to go back to the TACL storage and uncovered a wealth of history from the dusty file cabinets. This adventure led us to the conference theme “Throwback Taiwan”, but also allowed us to discover the past newsletters that TACL sent out a decade or more ago. In the hopes that we are taking the best ideas from our past and listening to the current leaders in TACL, we hope this inaugural re-launch of the TACL newsletter will provide that voice and inspire our community to work more together.
We would love any feedback you have, so please continue to reach out to us even before the National Convention in the Fall.
I'm sure that, like me, many of you have been following current events in Taiwan. Please click here for TACL's statement on the protests.
Thank you for reading.
Bob Wu
TACL National President

Midterm Conference
What happens in Vegas, stays in the hearts and minds of TACL members.
In late January, board members and program directors from TACL programs all over the country converged in Las Vegas for the 2014 TACL Midterm Conference: Throwback Taiwan to share ideas, network, and be inspired. Highlights included:
- #TBTaiwan moment: Former President Rob Liu discussed historical TACL triumphs and challenges, allowing current leaders to learn from the past in making choices today
- Downtown Project: Taiwanese-American Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh's innovative project to invigorate downtown Las Vegas provided our conference venue (the Work in Progress communal workspace), an inspiring talk with project staffer Maggie Hsu, and fun tours of the Zappos HQ and the Downtown Project
- Workshops: Board Transition; Building First-Gen Relationships; TACL Social Media Project; Fundraising 101, etc…
Some of the greatest memories will undoubtedly be the relationships built over morning McDonald's runs, chatting with new friends at the Skylofts, dancing till dawn at Light nightclub, and, in true Taiwanese-American fashion, eating our way through Las Vegas. All the TACL leaders will definitely bring the friendships made, lessons learned, and inspiration felt by all back to their respective chapters and programs and continue to grow TACL into a better organization. See our recap video here and read a Vegas recap blog here. See you next conference!

We are half way to our 2014 LYF Camp goal of 150 campers, but, growth and expansion can't happen without more counselors or resources like you! Head to our website for more information on how you can help. Let's make magic happen!

The immigration reform stalemate continues in Congress as House Republicans vote for two bills that would undermine the President's executive authority used to defer deportations of many young immigrants. House Democrats have introduced a petition to force a vote on the comprehensive immigration bill passed by the Senate last year, but most predict that it will not succeed.
The memoir of Taiwanese-American restauranteur Eddie Huang, Fresh Off the Boat, has been picked up as an ABC sitcom. The new title is causing controversy among Asian-Americans on the internet, but ABC has yet to comment. Huang is the owner of the popular Baohaus restaurant in New York.
The controversial SCA-5, a bill in the California State Assembly seeking to reinstate affirmative action in the state's public higher education institutions, has been withdrawn and replaced with a task force to study the issue. Asian-Americans were notably divided over the issue, with traditionally underrepresented ethnic groups supporting the bill and other more established groups vocally opposing the bill over fears that it would decrease chances of admission into top universities.

Tea Eggs (茶葉蛋)
Prep Time: 15 mins
Cook Time: 1 hr +

a dozen eggs
1/4 cup of dark soy sauce
1 large tea bag (black or green)
2~3 star anise
Instructions:
- Put the eggs in a pot and fill it up with water.
- Pour the soy sauce, tea bag, and star anise into the pot and bring to a boil (put cover on the pot so that eggs will peel easier).
- Boil for 15 mins or until eggs are mostly cooked.
- Take each egg and crack the shells with a metal spoon. This will create the pretty lines on the eggs and help flavor them.
- After all the eggs are cracked, put them back into the pot and continue to simmer for 1 hour.
