Meet Nine Candidates for
Four Salem City Council Seats

Friday, April 18th at Noon

Voters will elect four new members of the Salem City Council at next month’s Primary Election. Nine candidates are seeking the office.  We will meet and hear from nearly all of them at our next meeting Friday noon, April 18th.

In Ward 2, which includes much of southeast Salem, the three candidates are Tom Andersen, Sheronne Blasi and Bradd Swank.  Andersen is a trial attorney who has been an active leader in South Central Association of Neighbors; he will be out of the country and will be represented by a substitute.  Blasi is a state auditor and a member of the city planning commission; she served on the council in 2012, filling a vacancy by appointment. Swank served as special counsel for the state courts system prior to retirement, and is a former president of Salem City Club.

Ward 4 covers portions of South Salem. The candidates there are Scott Bassett and Steven McCoid. Bassett has retired after 32 years with the state as a budget analyst and performance measurement manager.  McCoid has worked for various trade associations, and recently retired as head of the Oregon Restaurant and Lodging Association.

Ward 6 is located in northeast Salem. Daniel Benjamin and Xue Lor are the candidates. Benjamin is a life insurance agent and has served on the city budget committee and as chairman of the North Lancaster Neighborhood Association. Lor is a state corrections officer and a former member of the Salem Human Rights and Relations Commission.

Ward 8 covers West Salem. Two candidates are seeking the council seat, Jim Lewis and Christopher Proudfoot.  Lewis is the executive officer of the Salem Association of Realtors and has been a longtime member of the city planning commission. Proudfoot, another longtime resident, has been a manager and consultant for state and local political campaigns.
