ART IN THE AFTERNOON

Come see and learn about one of the most influential L.A. artists of our time!
Please join the Contemporary Collectors on Thursday afternoon, May 8, as we venture
to Los Angeles where MOCA presents Mike Kelley, the largest exhibition of the artist’s
work to date and first comprehensive study since 1993. “MOCA would not be the place
it is without Mike Kelley as the museum grew up with him, and he with us”! says MOCA
curator, Bennett Simpson who will meet and greet our group and give us first hand
information on how Mike Kelley (1954-2012), “emerged as a crucial artist in Los Angeles
at the head of the pack that had pushed into prominence in the previous decade”,
according to Christopher Knight, Art Critic, Los Angeles Times. Kelley explored themes
as diverse as American class relations, sexuality, repressed memory, systems of religion
and transcendence, and post-punk politics.
Following our MOCA visit, we have been invited to tour the much esteemed Corporate
Art Collection of the law firm of O’Melveny & Myers. Noted for it’s photography
collection, Elise Barclay, curator, will meet and give us the tour which include works by
Ansel Adams, Berenice Abbott, Diane Arbus, Henri Cartier-Bresson, as well as
contemporary prints and drawings by Roy Lichtenstein, Richard Misrach and Ed Rusha.
Our afternoon will end at Bestia for dinner together at one of the “hottest & hippest”
restaurants in town located in the Arts District of downtown Los Angeles. Exposed
beams and factory windows give it an urban chic edge while the husband and wife team
Chef Ori Menashe (former chef of Angelini Osteria) and Pastry Chef Genevieve Gergis,
will regale us with a pre-selected menu of multi-Italian cuisine. Plan on having fun!
