Y-Level 2014 Emerging Artists Exhibition Catalogue

Eyelevel Gallery is now accepting responses for its catalogue accompanying the annual Y-Level exhibition featuring emerging artists from Atlantic Canada. The call for responses is open from 1 to 30 April 2014.

Group Show

What trends are apparent in curating today? On one hand, thesis-based curatorial projects have become statements, rather than questions, that presuppose the artwork. On the other hand, topical exhibitions have proliferated, but seldom establish meaningful connections between the works or the artists. On the third hand, artist-curators have appropriated the exhibition space and its contents as the setting and props for their own performative actions. The ethics of these approaches are potentially dubious, as are their effects upon both individual art practices and the creative community. Does the (emerging) artist have any say in the matter?

In response, this year’s Y-Level Group Show publication aims to catalogue artists’ perspectives on current curatorial approaches. In particular, participants are invited to relate their experiences with and appraisals of the prevailing “call-for-submissions” model that fuels all three of the strategies of curating described above. Good luck!
