Campus Notes

  • Students conduct research with industry scientists: TUSDM predoctoral students will have the opportunity to visit the domestic and international headquarters of leading dental manufacturers to conduct research with industry scientists. The opportunity, known as the Research Travel Program, allows students to gain insight into the multifaceted and interdisciplinary world of dental product manufacturing, and fosters understanding and shared information benefitting participants, patients, the Tufts community, and the profession at large. Interested students will gather at an informational session given by past student participants on April 10 at 12 p.m. Those interested are asked to RSVP to Katie Dunn, Department Administrator for the Office of Research Administration, by April 4. For more information, click here.
  • Faculty member updates:
Dr. Pamela Maragliano was recently appointed to the rank of Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Diagnosis and Health Promotion. A D04 alumna, Dr. Maragliano joined the TUSDM faculty in 2008, after completing a certificate in Prosthodontics from the UCLA School of Dentistry. She is currently Lead Practice Coordinator in the TUSDM clinic on the second floor and has been active in important initiatives at the school, including the interprofessional education program and the foreign exchange program with Spain and France. "She has been a valuable contributor as a teacher and colleague," said Dean Huw Thomas. "I enthusiastically support her promotion." Dr. Maragliano officially began her new role on April 1.
Dr. Carole Palmer, Professor in the Department of Diagnosis and Health Promotion, co-authored an article published March 19 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, "Challenges and opportunities for nutrition education and training in the health care professions: intraprofessional and interprofessional call to action." Dr. Palmer authored the paper with Drs. Rose Ann DiMaria-Ghalili, Associate Professor at Drexel University College of Nursing and Health Professions; Jay Mirtallo, Professor at The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy; Brian Tobin, Professor at University of South Carolina School of Medicine; Lisa Hark, Consultant at Weill Cornell Medical College; and Linda Van Horn, Professor and Associate Dean at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.
    • The Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) recently appointed Dr. Morton Rosenberg, Professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, as a Commission Consultant for the 2014-2015 year.
  • Tufts President honors TUSDM students for civic work: President Anthony Monaco announced April 3 that two TUSDM students will be given the Presidential Award for Citizenship and Public Service. Jaskaren Randhawa, D14, and Leslie Slowikowski, D14 were both named as award recipients. Each year this award recognizes undergraduate and graduate students from across Tufts University for outstanding achievement in community service and community leadership. Randhawa and Slowikowski will accept their awards at the Presidential Awards Ceremony on April 24.
  • TUSDM student honored for public health study: The American Association of Public Health Dentistry (AAPHD) recently awarded Dr. Zuhair Natto, resident in the Department of Periodontology, an Honorable Mention for the Leverett Graduate Dental Student Merit Award for Outstanding Achievement in Community Health Dentistry. Dr. Natto received the honorable mention for his poster, "Is periodontal health in the elderly more sensitive to the effects of chronic diseases, medications and smoking?" He will be recognized and presented with the award during the AAPHD Special Merit and Student Awards Presentation at the 2014 National Oral Health Conference on April 28 in Fort Worth, Texas. He will also present the winning poster during the General Poster Session that same day.
  • TUSDM student invited to scholar's program: The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently chose Jennie Leikin, D15 to take part in the Medical Research Scholars Program. The comprehensive, year-long research enrichment program invites research-oriented medical, dental and veterinary students to the NIH's campus in Bethesda, Md. Scholars in the program engage in a mentored basic, clinical, or translational research project that matches their research interests and career goals. This is the third Medical Research Scholars Program, after the NIH's Clinical Research Training and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Research Scholars Programs were merged. TUSDM has sent ten students to NIH research programs over the past 15 years.
  • Students and alumni network at annual event: The Alumni Association of the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and EDIC hosted the 15th Annual Student Alumni Networking Session on March 20. The event, which took place in Rachel's Amphitheater, included a panel discussion by alumni, followed by break-out sessions that included topics such as transitioning from student to professional, alternatives to private practice, specializations, and finances.
  • March staffing changes: TUSDM welcomed several new staff and faculty in March. Welcome to Karly Gorman, Staff Assistant for the Department of Prosthodontics and Operative Dentistry; Dr. Robert Gyurko, Associate Professor in the Department of Periodontology; Timothy Long, Central Sterilization Assistant in Clinic Materials; and Richard Maggio, Budget Analyst in the Office of Administration and Finance.
