Challenge of the Month!
Meet Brandon! Brandon Chambers is 12 years old and attends grade 7 at Ecole Harrison in Brandon, Manitoba. He was diagnosed with IDDM at age 4, but today he fully self-manages counting carbs, calculating his insulin and using his pump. Brandon's idea for his science fair project was simple: if insulin and water are both important parts of our metabolism, does water influence how our body uses insulin? He is looking for volunteers for continued research, to see if increased water consumption helps "level out" blood glucose corrections administered at meal times. His first results from over 140 samples were really quite amazing!

The Adventure Continues... New Zealand Style!
By Graham Hemple
Hope you guys are having fun in BC! It's a little cloudy up here at the Emerald Lakes, 1700m up, halfway through the Tongariro Alpine Crossing (the set of Mt Doom in Lord of the Rings for the fans). Not really "extreme" testing... but it was quite the hike.
Graham is currently trekking through New Zealand - can't wait to hear more!
TESTIMONIAL
Dear I Challenge Diabetes Team,
I would like to say thank you very much to you and your team for this past week at the Canmore Exercise Conference. My son Nathan attended, and he had a great time. I feel, as you probably do, that it is vital for kids with Type 1 Diabetes to share these experiences with other kids with Type 1, as well as positive role models.
Thank you to all of you for taking the time out of your busy schedules to foster these kids independence with their diabetes, and to help them understand the importance of exercise, and diabetes management, and all the while forcing them to have fun.
Please let me know if there are any volunteer opportunities you need help with in Cowtown, and I can see if I can help you out.
Thanks again, Nicole Tremere.
TIP OF THE MONTH!
With a wild session of adventure trips this month, we wanted to share a tip that would come in handy during big adventures.
Background: Over and over we see people who adjust insulin and over eat long before their adventure starts causing high blood sugars leading into the exercise. Imagine you are wearing a pair of snow pants on a long winter hike with high blood sugar and there is no washroom in sight - understandably a sense of panic may strike! This often leads to an over correction in an attempt at avoiding the panic.
Try these tips in your next adventure. Read Tips Here.
SUCCESS STORY!
Last month I Challenge Diabetes had the pleasure of hosting an event at Elfin Lakes, Garibaldi Provincial Park. We gathered a group of 22 individuals and hiked up 5.3 k into the mountain during a mild snow storm.
During the 3 hour climb to our destination and home for the night we had approximately 20 cm of snow fall on us. The snow did add an extra layer of base that we set out tents up on.

Community Updates
ICD was able to make it's biggest impact in the community ever this March - the most adventurous March break series with 13 straight days of events in 5 cities and 2 provinces thanks to some key efforts from outstanding volunteers!
Alan and Elizabeth Stewart prepared almost everything from food to camping gear and helped to lead our Snowy Mountain Adventure making a great first time experience for many winter campers. Mara and Adin Brenner hosted the Nanaimo Exercise and Excellence conference, literally, showing us the ropes in gymnastics, providing a shuttle service and feeding our big crew! Stasia, Rose and Sofia Siscoe hosted 8 homeless participants and leaders between programs with food and shelter! Tracy Hurst-DiMarco put in another excellent effort single handedly organizing the upcoming Hockey Drills and Diabetes Skill event. Dessi Zaharieva came through for a wild adventure right after surgery to teach several high energy sessions of Taekwondo across a 40+ year age difference! This is the sort of community engagement we are inspired by - thanks to those passionate people who make a difference!
