Welcome to Outerthere!

Outerthere flyers are here! ...and I just peed myself. Just kidding. But yea, I'm stoked!! You'll start seeing 'em at your fave #outdoor #gear shops around #NYC next few weeks.
Hi guys!

In 2012, many of you followed along on my Facebook as I went on an adventure binge crawling, climbing, diving, swinging, flying, jumping, and hiking into and off of things. After a while, you guys told me you wanted to do (some) these things with me. So, about 18 months ago, I organized my first couple of group hikes to test the waters. The turnout took me by surprise. And after organizing several other group hikes and camping trips that you guys kept coming out to, it just clicked that I wanted to plan and do more with you guys.

In March 2013, Outerthere came out of "beta testing" and throughout the rest of the year, I was privileged to have lead you guys on 14 hiking and camping trips, which for many of you was your first time on a hike ever, your first time peeing outdoors, or your first time getting lost and getting found outdoors. So, HUGE, huge thank you to all of you for supporting me and Outerthere!!! Happy Birthday to us! 2014 is going to be on and poppin' (even on Sundays! Yeah!) So, you down?  Hope so.  See you outerthere!

P.S. In honor of this milestone, I got some flyers printed to spread the word. I'm gonna start putting them at your favorite gear shop over the next couple of weekends and if you spot 'em, take a pic and tag it with hashtag "#outerthere" on Facebook, Insta, Twitter, YouTube Tumblr, FourSquare, and/or Pinterest, to get 25% off your next hike! Word. (Just reply to this email with a link to your tagged pic for your discount code.)

What’s that birthday month out there? I said, what’s that birthday month out there? Is it March? Yeah! Go Outerthere, it's your birthday!

Featured Outerthere Trips

  • NEW April 2014 - Snow Out With Your Board Out! We're coming off epic back-to-back snowboarding weekends with OvRride, where I actually taught a beginner how to snowboard. (See what you missed below). This young lady and another Outerthere fam were so excited, that they actually put their own weekend trip together and asked me for help planning.  Me being me, I did and here it is. By request only, so this trip won't be on the site, and won't be promoted any other way but here. So, if you're interested in wrapping up the snow season with a bang, and you're a beginner snowboarder, and want to get a bunch of awesome pics and clips of you shredding for the first time to share with your friends and fam, reply to this email for details on this Snow Out With Your Board Out trip! Word.
  • Apr 12, 2014 - Win-a-Sebago Lake Beginner Hike, my 65+ year old mom did this hike; so can you. It's that easy.
  • May 10, 2014 - Dunderberg Will Kick Your Bear Intermediate Hike, a challenging 7-mile loop around Bear Mountain's lesser known cousin.
  • May 24/25, 2014 - Just An Overnight on the Appalachian Trail, beginner car camping on the oldest section of the Appalachian Trail, with bonus easy night hike. Gear rentals now available by Brooklyn Outdoor Provisions.

Adventures Worth Checking Out

  • NEW Mar 28-30 - The Jersey Paddler's Paddlesport 2014. Basically, all things paddling (canoe, kayak, standup paddleboard). This thing felt like it kinda snuck up on me, but what the hell, I'm going.
  • Mar 28-30 - Beneath the Sea Diving Expo at the Meadowlands Expo Center.  Basically, all things diving.  I'm going.
  • Mar 29, 30th Annual GreenThumb GrowTogether Conference, get your hands dirty, step up yo' gardening game, and make some new friends. Family friendly.
  • Mar 31+, Mappy Hour by OutdoorFest. It's a get together of outdoorsy folks to plan trips together over free beers provided by Yelp. Hosted at Fjallraven. 1st event was awesome (pic above). Let me know if you're down and we'll go together to represent Outerthere! Word.
  • April 11-13 - East Coast Paddlesports & Outdoor Festival. It's an 8-hour drive to North Carolina (or a short flight), but you're guaranteed to OD on all things paddle: kayaks, canoes, stand-up boards. Carpooling, food, camping, and your entry fee won't break your bank account. And road trip!
  • May 4 - Wings for Life World Run kicks off. Runners in 40 cities start and stop at the same time. It's kinda epic.
  • May 16-18 - Dirt Rag Dirt Fest 2014, presented by Niner Bikes! It's a 4 to 5 hour drive from NYC, but you'll get to test new bikes, new tires, new trails, from a whole new festival.
  • May 31 - June 8 - From the site: OutdoorFest is a ten-day, citywide festival celebrating outdoor enthusiasts in all five boroughs through community led events.*
  • June 18 - Aug 29, Whale and dolphin watching off the coast of Rockaway Beach in Queens! Easiest decision on how to spend $20 bucks you'll make this summer.
  • NEW June 21 - 5K FoamFest. I don't often do races, K's and -thons. But when I do, there's foam, slides, and tee-shirts involved. Nuff said. Bonus: it's for a good cause.
* Last email, I incorrectly stated that this event was called OutdoorRise. OutdoorFest is totally new. Sorry, Sarah!

What You Missed

  • Mar 8, The Bear Stuck Its Appalachian in Anthony's Nose Beginner Hike, More pics released!  See the album.
  • Mar 15 + 22, Outerthere Rides With OvRride! Miraculously, it snowed both Saturdays in Killington so we got to ride in feet(!) of snow. And that's how we do. But like I said in the Featured Outerthere Trips above, we're going back one more time! Big thanks to Adele and Sandi for braving the insane winds, but better yet, for letting this fool teach 'em how to ride. Turns out I'm actually not that bad of an instructor.

Inspiring Adventures From Your Seat

Wait, wait, one more cold-weather thing you need to try. Ice racing. Yes, ice racing. [3:49]

OK, enough with the cold. Try something different this spring. Like skateboarding. [1:25]

Or diving. Without scuba gear. Just hold your breath for 20 minutes. [Scroll down for video, 3:02]

So many people want to jump off One World Trade, they should just sell tickets. [4:57]

Whitewater kayaking in Columbia is serious. The POV action starts at minute 6 and if you feel yourself gasping for air, you're not alone. If you don't get goosebumps at the pic above and this season's potentially similar northeast whitewater conditions, then you're just weird. [23:30]

Beta For Adventures*

So many hikes, so little time.

So, build your own adventure mobile to get to more of them.

In case of a snake bite, don't panic, be prepared.

And when in croc country, remember, crocs climb trees.

And after that epic hike, grab that epic slice.

*In this context, Beta means details and other relevant info about routes and trails for climbers or hikers, not that it's in a pre-launch phase.
