Welcome <<First Name>>,

If you know of an event or are hosting an event in the community that you think our readers would like to know about, please email me at office@firstunitarian.net. I am always looking to promote events in the greater Baltimore area.

Thank You From the Social Action Clearinghouse

One of the youth at YES Drop-In Center, our January/February Change for Change partner, is seeking odd jobs to help get by i.e. maintenance, construction, cleaning, etc.  If you can help, contact Lara Law at lara@yesdropincenter.org.

Speaking of recent Change for Change partners, Soul Kitchen Director Marcus Colasurdo asked to relay his deepest gratitude to everyone at First Unitarian for our generosity. While planning the February chicken dinner, he had not received sufficient donations to feed the number of people expected. He was reviewing his donor list when our Change for Change check arrived.  As a result,150 homeless people and others in need enjoyed a nourishing meal in a warm setting on a cold winter night.

Economic Inequality Matters: Moving Toward Fairness

Saturday, May 3, 9:30 a.m.-12:00 noon
UU Church of Arlington
4444 Arlington Blvd.
Arlington, VA

Join UUSJ and partner groups  for an opportunity for timely information with a focus on action and time for discussion.   More  details coming soon.

Also, another UUSJ member congregation will show the film, "Inequality for All" on Friday,  May 2 at 7:00 p.m.  This showing is at Goodloe Memorial UU Congregation 1540C Pointer Place, Bowie, MD 20716.

“Inequality for All” is a documentary, featuring former U.S. Labor Secretary Robert Reich, raising awareness of the country's widening economic gap.  Income inequality has become the talk of the nation, as well as one of UUSJ’s primary social justice issues.  It is time to change the conversation from concern to action – by convening Americans in homes across the country to watch the film together on the same night.  A better understanding of the problem can lead to more effective action.

More information about the film can be found on this website where you can also watch the trailer.

Sincerely,
Pat Karlsen, Nancy Boardman, Marsha White

Fort McHenry Field Day On April 26

Every spring and fall, the National Aquarium Conservation Team (ACT!) recruits volunteers to restore habitat for wildlife, remove debris, and maintain trails at Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine in Baltimore.

Since the National Aquarium took over stewardship of this marsh in 1999, volunteers have helped collect nearly 600,000 pieces of debris!

Fort McHenry Field Days are more than just debris cleanups, however; work can include trail maintenance, light construction, or planting native flowers in our rain and butterfly gardens. This work all adds up to creating a valuable green space in the heart of Baltimore City that is utilized by hundreds of species of birds, reptiles like box turtles and diamondback terrapins, and aquatic critters like juvenile blue crabs and small fish.

By joining us for a Fort McHenry Field Day, you can help make the marsh a cleaner place for native animals to live, and a great place for student groups from the city and surrounding counties to learn about marsh ecology.

ACT! partners with the National Park Conservation Association, National Park Service, Maryland Port Administration, and Steinweg Baltimore to make this event possible.

Pre-registration is required for all conservation events. Volunteers must be at least 10 years old. Please contact conserve@aqua.org if you have questions or would like additional details.

Participants must be at least 10 years old. All participants under 10 years of age must be accompanied by a supervising adult.
You can pre-register here.

Join UU Women in a Solidarity Fast

March 30, 2014
Join us in a 24-hour fast to demand immigration reform that treats women and families fairly!
Register below

Did you know that women and children comprise 75% of all immigrants in the United States? Our current immigration system disproportionately harms women and families, and even though many politicians do not want to confront the legislation, we know our broken system has been tearing families apart for far too long.

Our coalition partners at We Belong Together, as well as other organizations, invite 5,000 women to join a major month-long women's action focused on fasting and action. Through fasting and a coordinated set of actions - first in communities across the country, and then together with UUA staff people in Washington, DC -women will hold the moral center in demanding immigration reform that treats women and families fairly. Immigration activists will be also travelling across the country by bus, from Phoenix to Raleigh to you, fasting along the way and raising awareness.

By registering, please commit to fast for 24 hours on March 30. We can send you materials and support so you can invite your friends, family, and congregation members to join with you. Together we can form the spark to pass compassionate immigration reform for all immigrants and families.
After you have registered, please send a selfie to love@uua.org telling us why you are fasting! Make your own sign or use one of these (1 & 2). We will be creating a selfie collage to bring together all of the UU women across the country dedicated to common sense immigration reform!
