Water management in SANo one can live without water. However, judging by how many South Africans waste water, one would think we have an unlimited. What many of us may not realise is that there’s not enough water to go around. And the little water we do have is often too dirty for human consumption. Greenpeace urges end to fossil fuel investments

Issuing an SOS emergency alert ahead of an Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) meeting in Japan, Greenpeace warned that climate change is already devastating nations, destroying lives and costing billions of dollars in damage.

City to turn off lights in support of Earth Hour


Earth Hour 2014On Saturday 29 March 2014 millions of people from around the world will again switch off their lights from 20:30 to 21:30 (local time) in support of the World Wide Fund for Nature’s (WWF) Earth Hour. This is a symbolic act of global unity. The City of Cape Town will be switching off the lights in its own buildings and on Table Mountain.

Rescue efforts to continue in flood-hit SA


Madibeng flood disasterSearch-and-rescue operations will continue in parts of the country affected by recent heavy rains, Cabinet said last week. In a post-Cabinet briefing, Acting Minister of Performance Monitoring and Evaluation Angie Motshekga expressed condolences to the families of over 30 people killed in the flooding that hit parts of the North West, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Gauteng, and KwaZulu-Natal.

Bela-Bela residents urged to be waterwise


The town of Bela-Bela, formerly known as 'Warmbaths' owes its origins to the hot mineral springs that bubble out of the earth at about 22,000 litres per hour at a temperature of approximately 53°C. The water is rich in minerals such as sodium chloride, calcium carbonate and other salts, and is believed to have curative properties.Bela-Bela residents should use water wisely, Deputy Water Affairs Minister Rejoice Mabudafhasi warned on Tuesday. She was speaking in Rapotokwane, near Bela-Bela in Limpopo. Earlier this month, Bela-Bela and surrounding areas were flooded when a dam wall burst after days of heavy rain.

City cancels Princess Vlei shopping centre project

Image: Gavin Lawson (Zandvlei Trust).The City of Cape Town has listened to the community and decided that the proposal for a shopping centre on the Princess Vlei land is inappropriate and will cancel the project. The City has been in discussions with the prospective developer of the land over the past year to investigate alternatives to the proposed development.

Lourens River to receive emergency repairs after severe flooding


Lourens River flood Somerset West repairsAs part of the City of Cape Town’s commitment to building a safe city, emergency repairs and the replacement of damaged infrastructure will start soon at Lourens River, following the severe flooding in Somerset West on 15 and 16 November last year. The City had requested financial assistance to deal with the required emergency work after the area was declared a provincial disaster.

Forewarned is forearmed: shifting waste laws


shifting waste lawsAttended by more than 60 delegates, the waste law workshop answered some of the key questions relating to the legal aspects of waste management and how this affects business operations as well as opportunities for growth of the Green Economy. The three-hour workshop saw the coming together of experts in the field, including Belinda Langenhoven (Department of Environmental Affairs & Development Planning), who gave a broad overview of recent environmental /waste legislation and implications for the waste management and recycling sector.
