AASAS Happenings

Welcome to the monthly E-News Flash from the Association of Alberta Sexual Assault Services (AASAS).

This month, AASAS would like to share the video we created titled Reporting Sexual Assault: It’s Your Decision. This video was created to provide comprehensive, accurate and accessible information about the justice system to individuals who have been impacted by sexual violence. The video includes information about the criminal justice system as well as outlines and defines the specific roles that professionals have within this system including police, medical/forensic evidence collectors (doctors and/or nurses), crown prosecutor, judge, victim support services and advocates.

It is our hope that the information conveyed on the video will be a great resource for anyone who may be considering reporting a sexual assault or who has already reported but is requiring further information on how to navigate the justice system.

The video can be accessed from the www.aasas.ca website. If you would prefer to have a hard DVD copy, please e-mail mailbox@aasas.ca and one will be mailed out.

*The Solicitor General Victims of Crime grant made the development of this video possible.

AASAS Member Agency Initiatives:

Calgary Communities Against Sexual Abuse (CCASA) is currently piloting a new education program "ManEnough?" aimed at male identified youth and young adults. The “ManEnough?” Program is designed to assist men in the development of the skills needed to challenge beliefs and values that support violence and to explore alternative constructions of masculinity that promote equality. For more information on CCASA's "ManEnough?" program please visit: http://www.calgarycasa.com/programs/community-outreach-program/manenough-program/

Lloydminster Sexual Assault and Information Centre (LSAIC) delivered the AASAS First Responder Training to professionals and paraprofessionals on March 26th and 27th to participants in Lloydminster, Bonnyville, Fort McMurray, as well as to participants from Saskatchewan.

The goal of the AASAS First Responder Training is to provide information on how to respond appropriately and effectively to disclosures of sexual abuse and sexual assault from children, youth and adults.

The evaluations from the LSAIC training were extremely positive and one participant commented "I feel that everyone and anyone should receive this training!"

To learn more about the AASAS First Responder training or to find out where training workshops are being facilitated throughout the province please visit the aasas.ca website or e-mail mailbox@aasas.ca.

SAFFRON Centre Ltd recently expanded its therapy facilities to include an equipped Play Therapy room. They are remodeling their meeting room to become a comfortable, safe space for some of our most vulnerable clients to process their experiences through play and art. They have received donations of toys, storage containers, and shelving from generous community members for this project.

SAFFRON is also hosting a Play Therapy training opportunity with Rocky Mountain Play Therapy Institute this fall, to be held in Sherwood Park.  If you are interested in donating to the Play Therapy room, or want to attend the Play Therapy training, please contact Deborah at (780) 449-0900 or email deborah@saffron-ssac.com.
