Register for Third Mark Ain Business Model Workshop

The 2014 Mark Ain Business Model Workshop Series concludes with “Financing and Pitching,” taught by Rami Katz, COO of Excell Partners, at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 2, in Gleason 318/418. Attendees can register online or call 276-3500. Food will be served and the workshop is free and open to all members of the University and the general public.


Students: Register for the UR Ventures Commercialization Boot Camp

Register now for the UR Ventures Commercialization Boot Camp on Saturday, April 5 from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Gleason Hall, Room 118. The event will provide student participants with an opportunity to examine the practice of technology transfer within the academic sector and learn the fundamentals of Intellectual Property and Commercialization. This workshop is free and open to all UR students while space is still available. Pizza will be served. To register, email karen.grabowski@rochester.edu.


Attend the 2014 Finger Lakes Region NY Business Plan Contest on April 9

The University community and the general public are invited to attend the second annual Finger Lakes Region Semi-Final Presentation Round of the New York Business Plan Competition on Wednesday, April 9 at 6 p.m. in Goergen Hall, University of Rochester River Campus. Student teams from area colleges will compete for a chance to advance to the final round at the University at Albany at the end of April, where they will vie for $500,000 in cash and in-kind prizes.


UR Undergrads and Grad Students: Enter the Mark Ain Business Model Competition by April 16

Submit your business plans to the eighth annual Mark Ain Business Model Competition. First place will win $10,000; second place will receive $2,500; and third place will get $1,000. A team of up to five students may submit one plan and students may submit a business plan that was written for a current or past course. Submissions must be submitted electronically to Susanna Virgilio at the Center for Entrepreneurship by 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 16. Ten semi-finalist teams will be selected to present their business plans on May 1. From the semi-finalist presentations, the pool will be whittled down to five finalist teams who will have a chance to win the cash prizes during the competition on May 13. UR Engineering Students: Enter the Forbes Competition by April 21

Full-time undergraduate engineering or applied sciences students can apply and compete in the Charles and Janet Forbes Entrepreneurial Competition by submitting a plan for a technical business. Cash prizes will be awarded to top teams. Send business plans electronically to susanna.virgilio@rochester.edu by 4 p.m. Monday, April 21. Tim Talley ’88: An Entrepreneurial Journey on ABC’s Shark Tank

Tim Talley ’88 (BS in Electrical Engineering), founder of U-Lace, a company that produces customized laces for sneakers, who recently received an investment from Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban during his appearance on ABC’s “Shark Tank,” will give a talk on his entrepreneurial journey on Wednesday, April 23 at 4:45 p.m. in Schlegel 407. The talk is free and open to the University community and the general public. A reception and meet and greet with the speaker will follow in the Eisenberg Rotunda. Attendees must register in advance online or call 276-3500.


Save the Date for Rochester Startup Weekend: April 25-27

Startup Weekends are 54-hour events where developers, designers, marketers, product managers and startup enthusiasts come together to share ideas, form teams, build products, and launch startups (typically mobile apps). The second biennial Rochester Startup Weekend will be held on April 25-27, 2014 at Brand NetworksJoin our email list to be notified when registration opens. Additionally, the organizers are looking for monetary and in-kind sponsors, coaches, judges and speakers. Please let us know if you’re interested in supporting Rochester Startup Weekend.


LivePlan and Competitor's Guide Available for Mark Ain Business Model Competition Entrants

For University of Rochester students who intend to compete in the 2014 Mark Ain Business Model Competition, team leaders should contact cfe@rochester.edu to receive a unique promo code for a free 6-month license to LivePlan, online business plan software. You will need to provide your name, company name, and email address. Additionally, the competitor’s guide is now available to download, or pick up a hard copy at the Center for Entrepreneurship, 1-211 Carol Simon Hall.


UR Students: Apply to the Student Incubator

The University of Rochester has opened student incubator space at High Tech Rochester, made possible by Simon alumnus Mark S. Ain ’67S (MBA). Student Incubator companies will have access to all client amenities within the HTR Lennox Tech Enterprise Center, as well as access to High Tech Rochester’s Director of New Ventures and Entrepreneurs-in-Residence, who can provide additional coaching, mentoring, and connections. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis; Rochester students at any level of study can apply. The incubator is accessible on the bus loop.
