Welcome to our newsletter for April 2014!

AMECA's plans for the healthcare clinic are evolving and developing. In spite of the many challenges that we meet, our journey is marked by the generosity of spirit and the kindness of so many people. Our regular donations are growing and we would like to say a heartfelt thank you to all our supporters. We hope that more of you may wish to help us, with even a modest monthly amount.

Read on and be inspired...............

Round Table Blantyre 20 Support

In November 2013, an amazing group of people undertook a 60km challenging sponsored cycle ride to Mount Mulanje, organised by Round Table 20, Blantyre, Malawi.

In spite of the searing heat and the fatigue, scores of participants completed the ride and a total of 4 million Kwacha was raised for AMECA, which equates to around £6,000. This is an unprecedented result for an event of this type in Malawi.

The AMECA Trust wishes to express deepest gratitude to everyone at Round Table 20, to all the participants, to the many sponsors and to the scores of logistical support volunteers. Special thanks go to Jason, Mussa and David for their unwavering enthusiasm and for their belief in AMECA.

Supporting future dental care in Malawi

Epsom Dental Centre are lending their support to raise funds to provide a small dental unit within the healthcare clinic that AMECA will be building in the Lower Shire, close to Bangula.

Currently, there is no dentist nor any meaningful dental care for a population of 250,000 people in Nsanje Distirct. The nearest dentist is in Blantyre, a distance of some 137km; the journey is simply unaffordable to most of the community.

In Malawi, dental services only benefit those who live in urban/suburban areas. The rural masses (85%) suffer silently for lack of dental services in the country.

Owner and principal dentist Chig Amin, a longtime supporter of AMECA, is giving a generous donation from the practice and will be promoting this venture to patients. The practice will be involved in this initiative over the long term to support building, provision of equipment and dental training for local healthcare workers.

The surgery opened in 2002 and Alex, in whose enduring memory this charity was founded, was one of the first registered patients at this great dental practice. Find them at http://epsomdental.co.uk

Further Surgical Training Visits to Malawi

Following the really successful pilot visit of a team of UK surgeons to Malawi in September of last year, a further surgical visit will be undertaken in May 2014.

Due to the acute shortage of surgeons in Malawi, (16 surgeons for 15 million people) most of the routine surgery, especially in remote rural areas, is performed by Clinical Officers. The team of surgeons, from hospitals across Surrey, will visit district hospitals in southern Malawi to provide surgical teaching and training for clinical officers. They will also bring much-needed surgical and other hospital equipment to the district hospitals.

Consultant surgeon Paul Thomas, a trustee of The AMECA Trust, is providing the clinical lead for these visits. Paul is a founder of LAST, (Links in Africa for Surgical Training); AMECA continues to provide charitable governance and on the ground support for LAST's activities in Malawi.

Follow up visits are being planned to ensure the sustainability of this initiative.

Walking The Nile

As most of our readers are aware, Lev Wood, Alex's longstanding friend at Nottingham University and fellow Army colleague, set off in December 2013 on a 12-month, 4,250-mile journey up the Nile through Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, South Sudan, North Sudan and Egypt.

At the time of writing, Lev is almost 100 days into his trip and will shortly arrive in South Sudan.

We were all shocked and saddened by the recent tragic news of journalist Matthew Power's death while covering the expedition for Men's Journal magazine. Our thoughts and condolences go out to his family and his colleagues at this time.

Lev intends to raise a substantial amount for his nominated charities, which include AMECA. We are really grateful to Lev for his support and wish him a safe passage for the remainder of his journey.

The expedition is being s being filmed for a four-part Channel 4 series to be broadcast later this year. For more information, go to http://www.channel4.com/programmes/walking-the-nile

AMECA Fundraising Challenges

Secret Compass has arranged some really great fundraising challenges in Malawi and we are very excited that we have two groups coming out later this year. The groups will be climbing on Mount Mulanje, taking part in a community renovation project and visiting hospitals, including The AMECA Wing at The Beit CURE International Hospital.

One of the groups is comprised of around 18 enthusiastic healthcare students from Southampton and Nottingham Universities. The second group is made up of some of AMECA's more mature supporters, who did not see why only students should have all the fun. AMECA refrains from comment as to which lot are more high maintenance!!

AMECA would like to thank our university students who so enthusiastically continue to get involved, together with our new more mature adventurers!! Southampton School of Nursing is already sorting their groups for 2015!!

For more information on these challenges, visit the Secret Compass website at http://secretcompass.com/ameca-adult-fundraising-challenge/

Your Support.............

This photo was taken when our land was first identified by the Traditional Authority as a possible site for the future AMECA clinic.

Located near Bangula, in the Lower Shire, it is one the most deprived regions in one of the world's most deprived countries, which is why we have chosen to be there.

It has been a long hard road to register our land, to register as a Not for Profit entity in Malawi and focus our thinking to how we can deliver a holistic healthcare package, not only for the immediate community, but for the whole Bangula area. We are working with others, which is important in order to minimise duplication of resources and maximise impact.

It is a good moment, to acknowledge all the help, advice and support we have received from so many in Malawi, to get this far. Thank you, wholeheartedly.

It is also a good moment to remind ourselves and to remind you of just how much we need your ongoing support with fundraising for this project.

As you are aware, we pride ourselves on our low administration costs and we work very hard to ensure that your kind donations are correctly applied to our projects, instead of being lost in administration and unnecessary spend.

With kind regards to you all,

The AMECA Trust.

A last reminder of why.................

A regular donation of just £20 a month with gift aid provides £300 a year to the charity. This could fund:
  • A matron's salary for a month
  • A medical assistant's salary for 2 months
  • A state enrolled nurse for 2 months
  • A patient attendant's salary for almost 5 months
Please take a moment to consider if you could manage a small regular donation to the charity, which will be so very much appreciated. To donate.................
