NP E-News March 26th

It’s finally sunny and warm and our roadsides need CLEANING!  Come join us for a Washington County Roadside Clean Up project on Saturday, April 12th.  Our work will make a big difference in the environment that we see every day and will help us raise funds for New Pioneers.  Meet at 9am at the Springfield Recycling Center for orientation and transportation to the worksite.  Kids over 12 are welcome to help.  This will be a fun project to share with friends and family and will make a difference we all can see!  Let us know if you can come by calling Amanda Manning at 859583-8888 or email ahaan@earthlink.net.
Preparations for the First Annual Springfield Green Festival, Saturday, April 26, are in full swing.  This will be a 10am to 6pm day of local food, drink, music, crafts and lots of fascinating demonstrations of sustainable practices that help us to live more responsibly on the earth.  Just to whet your interest, here is a first sample of some of the vendors:  Swope Toyota of Etown demonstrating a hybrid Prius, Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill teaching how to make baskets, Daniel Barber showing how to grow mushrooms in logs, Darlene Kelly cooking with sunlight, and three different booths selling vegetable and flower plants:  The Berry Farming Program at St. Catharine College, Country Place in Springfield, and the Lincoln Trail Master Gardeners.  Buy your heirloom seeds too from the Baker Creek assortment we’ll have available.  New Pioneers will also have a “Re-Purposing” booth (use what you have instead of buying more!) and an interesting set of raffle prizes.  Among the many live music groups will be the Pleasant Hill Singers of Shakertown. Stay tuned - we will be including more of the almost 40 attractions in each of the next two week’s issues.  Start inviting your friends and family today to join you at this exciting event!          Springfield Farmers Market:  We have openings for new vendors who want to sell local produce or crafts at the Market this summer, BUT we need to hear from you pronto!!  Please call Sr. Claire at 859-336-5070 if you are interested.  This is a great way to share the fruits of your labors with local folks who really value what you do.
International News:  The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has just issued another very serious warning about the impact of climate change on food production, economic growth, and  increasing violence as basic natural resources become more and more scarce.  All the countries of the world will be affected if we all don’t immediately find ways to cut greenhouse gas emissions  and commit ourselves to living more sustainably.  Let’s encourage each other to do all that we can locally and in every other way to change the course of history for the better!
