Top international acoustic duo Cathryn Craig and Brian Willoughby will be headlining the next Liverpool Acoustic Live on Friday 25th April 2014 at the View Two Gallery.

Following the publication of the Hillsborough Independent Panel report into the 1989 disaster, Virginian singer Cathryn Craig and virtuoso Strawbs guitarist Brian Willoughby wrote and recorded a song called Time Has Proved You Right, a moving tribute to the Hillsborough families and survivors.

The song is featured on their current album Real World and will be performed at the award-winning Liverpool Acoustic Live event this coming Friday. The song can also be heard on the Liverpool Acoustic SoundCloud page.

Supporting Cathryn and Brian on Friday 25th April will be local singer-songwriter, and member of both Elbow Jane and Ashley Hutchings' Rainbow Chasers, Joe Topping, along with  an opening set from impressive 17 year old singer-songwriter Paddy Clegg.

Cathryn Craig is from Virginia, USA, and has built a strong reputation as both performer and songwriter. She has sung with Chet Atkins, The Righteous Brothers, Shel Silverstein and Jorma Kaukonen. Cathryn's family is steeped in music - her great-grandfather Jacob Sowder was recorded by Cecil Sharp and is featured in Sharp’s book English Folk Songs From The Southern Appalachians.

Brian Willoughby is best known for his virtuoso performances on electric and acoustic guitar, with progressive folk/rock band Strawbs. He has also played with Mary Hopkin, Joe Brown, New World, Roger Whittaker, Bridget St. John, Jim Diamond and Monty Python.

Both Cathryn and Brian have accompanied Nanci Griffith.

Their Alice’s Song was an Aled Jones highlight of the year on BBC Radio 2.

Cathryn was Simon Mayo's star guest on BBC Radio 2Day, live from Nashville.

Real World is the current album, featuring live studio recordings of strong Craig/Willoughby compositions.

  • “They catch a mood that could produce goosebumps on sheet metal (The Glasgow Herald)
  • “Long live traditional music, even when it's only just been written” (The Living Tradition)

JOE TOPPING
joetoppingmusic.com

Joe Topping is a singer-songwriter and guitarist who has been described as a "cross between Ry Cooder, Woody Guthrie and Paul Brady". From the traditional music heard in the folk clubs he grew up around to the Americana and blues influences from his adventures in the USA which have included living in a pickup truck and driving around America for the best part of a year and later walking 1400 miles with a guitar on his back from Chicago to New Orleans!

Joe has developed his own unique bottleneck guitar style which he employs in many of his original songs and has a voice that can move from velvet soft to steely and powerful. Joe has played on stage and in the studio with many legends of the British folk scene including members of Fairport Convention, While and Matthews, Andy Irvine and most recently as stand in lead vocalist in the BBC2 award winning “Best live Act” Home Service whilst John Tams recovered from surgery.

Joe also currently plays in the bands  Elbow Jane and The Rainbow Chasers (with Ashley Hutchings).

PADDY CLEGG

Paddy Clegg is a 17 year old singer songwriter from Huyton, Liverpool.

From a young age the teenager has had a great interest in music with him being a drummer in bands in the past. However, since October 2013, Paddy picked up his second instrument (the guitar) and started to write/compose and record his own songs in his bedroom. Shortly after having a few original songs under his belt he began to gig in and around the Liverpool area displaying his musical talents to the public.

As soon as 2014 kicked in, Paddy burst onto the Liverpool Music scene releasing his catchy debut single Back To The Start. The single had a very positive response with it being played on Dave Monks' BBC Introducing show on BBC Radio Merseyside.

Many people have described Paddy's music sound to having similar sort of elements to big stars such as The La's, Newton Faulkner, Jake Bugg and Mumford & Sons.

Paddy released his debut 4 track EP called Head In The Clouds in early March and which is available to purchase on iTunes.

Note to editors

Liverpool Acoustic is the only website of its kind in the UK. It was created by Graham Holland in April 2008 as a central resource for the vibrant and exciting acoustic music scene in Liverpool and the Greater Merseyside area. It contains a diary of acoustic events including festivals, theatre concerts and folk clubs to showcases and open mic nights. The News and Reviews is available as a free email subscription and carries news about upcoming events, reviews of cds and gigs, interviews with local musicians, and a newsletter on the first of each month.

Liverpool Acoustic Live is a double award winning monthly acoustic music event run jointly by Graham Holland and local musician Stuart Todd, as a natural spin-off from the website. Each night features three or four of the best acoustic performers, singer-songwriters, bands and musicians on the local scene today performing alongside top-class national and international musicians.

Liverpool Acoustic eXtraLiverpool Acoustic PresentsLiverpool Acoustic Garden, and Liverpool Acoustic Afternoon are occasional live music events, often run in collaboration with other local promoters and events. Liverpool Acoustic Open Mic @ Sound is our weekly event featuring open mic with a selection of booked acts.
