Critical queer perspectives on incarceration
Tuesday 4/22 4:30 – 6 PM @ Axinn 229
Tomorrow Reina Gossett, Ryan Conrad, and Yasmin Nair will discuss the historical criminalization of gender and sexual deviance, taking an abolitionist stance against the prison industrial complex and offering alternative ways of addressing gender violence. Drawing on a diverse array of their experiences in organizing, activism, and scholarship, they will challenge conventions about hate crimes legislation, expose the realities of trans*/queer imprisonment, and help to queer the growing conversation about abolition. Discuss local migrant labor with Juntos

Join the Center for Social Entrepreneurship this Thursday as they host a screening for Global Health University's webinar about global engagement, which will explore the relationship between ethics, cultural competency, and impactful design with six expert panelists. Lead a MAlt trip next Feb Break
Deadline: Friday 4/25
This Friday is deadline to apply to lead one of the MAlt trips next Feb Break! MAlt leaders work to plan a week-long trip for their peers that meets community-based needs through service, education, and solidarity. MAlt trips go all over. This past year MAlt traveled to Haiti, South Carolina, the Dominican Republic, New Orleans, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania. Here’s how some MAlters described their trips in one word: "community", "warmth", "eye-opening", "growth", "intense", "challenging", "humbling", "real", "soulful", "unforgettable". Questions? Build a playground at Charter House
Saturday 4/26 9 AM - 12 PM @ Charter House
Come and join VSO volunteers to build a new playground for the children living at Charter House this coming Saturday! We'll also help prep the garden a little bit--spring planting is here! Tools and transportation will be provided. We plan to depart at 9 AM at ADK and plan to be back on campus around noon. Climate change summit

Want to make new friends? Learn new organizing skills? Plan awesome campaigns with students across the state? Come to the Vermont Student Climate Coalition (VSCC)'s first convergence on Saturday, April 26 at UVM! Fill out

Educate local students about nutrition
Nutrition Outreach & Mentoring (NOM) is working with Mary Hogan Elementary School to educate students about nutrition.  It's lots of fun to engage with students and make tasty and nutritious snacks. We will provide curriculum, food, and materials for you to use in a 45-60 minute lesson in a classroom at Mary Hogan. Familiar with Sketchup?
Ilsley Library is seeking a computer-savvy volunteer to teach a basic workshop to community members on using Sketchup. Interested? Contact Chris Kirby, librarian for Ilsley's Library for Adult Services and Technology, at chris.kirby@ilsleypubliclibrary.org.
 
Relay for Life next Friday
Middlebury College is having their annual Relay for Life event on Friday 5/2 starting at 5:30 PM! Come to the athletic fields to enjoy music and dance performances, eat dinner, and camp out with your team, all in support of cancer patients and in celebration of cancer survivors. Join a relay team or create your own! Register for $10 at go/relay.
 
Support children who have chronic illness with For The Kids
Want to make to make an impact for your young neighbors and friends? For The Kids supports the work of Vermont Children's Hospital through fundraisers and family outreach. Find out how you can help by attending one of their weekly meetings, Tuesdays 7:20 - 8 PM at the LaForce Seminar Room. Questions? Contact FTK at ftkmiddlebury@gmail.com.

Volunteer abroad with Unite for Sight
Unite for Sight is generating a lot of positive attention for its global health immersion program. If you're interested in medicine, global health, or social entrepreneurship, look into short-term volunteering and fellowship opportunities with their Global Impact Corps, which pairs volunteers with doctors in the field to conduct patient intakes, visual acuity tests, observe surgeries, and more. VT Foodbank's Hunter Action Conference
Vermont Foodbank will host the 2014 Hunger Action Conference in Burlington on Friday 5/9 from 7:30 AM - 5 PM. The workshops look superb, including "Mindfulness in Leadership" and "Creating an Elevator Speech That Cannot Be Ignored". Registration can be found here. Students would register as part of a "non-profit" (Middlebury College)--please consider subsidizing the cost of attendance with a Community Engagement mini-grant!
