Alzheimer's Support Ministry

Pastor: Rick McLean 818-909-5500
At our last meeting...

We were excited and encouraged by Ryan to view Job's suffering in a different light.
The question was posed as to why Job's friends got so much attention and how can this book be more meaningful to us in our situation.
We looked at chapter 28 as being the focal point of the whole book, being that no amount of effort, even as demanding as mining for precious treasures, will let us understand the depths of God's wisdom.  There is a limit to what we can understand when entering in to the realm of the deeper, hidden, mysteries of what God is doing behind the scenes.  In the challenges of caring for our loved ones, we can get trapped into the "what ifs" and we try to apply the practical type of wisdom found in the Proverbs which is understandable to all. The divine wisdom necessary to explain suffering is sometimes inaccessible to man.  (Continued next month.)

Psalms 5:11  —  "But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice: let them ever shout for JOY, because thou defendest them: let them also that love thy name be JOYFUL in thee."

Suggestions to experience contentment

1.  Never complain about anything, not even the weather.
2.  Never picture yourself to be under a different set of circumstances than you are presently in.
3.  Never compare your lot with that of another.
4.  Never allow yourself to dwell on the wish that this or that had been, or were, otherwise than it was, or is.
5.  Never dwell on tomorrow.  Remember it is God’s, and not yours.

Now godliness with contentment is great gain. - 1 Timothy 6:6 NKJV

Giving Attention to Prayer

Weighing In
by Marsha Headley

Burdens big as boulders
Time to weigh them in.
Lord, it seems today my heart
Has such a lot of them.

You never told me they were mine
“Just cast your cares,” You said
But day by day they’ve added up
til now I’m in my bed.

That casting part is hard for me
-Well, not the little ones.
But burdens big as boulders
It seems they weigh a ton!

So I’m weighing in and dropping off
The ones I’ve added on.
Could you sculpt them into works of art
To show the work you’ve done?

Your peace that passes understanding
Put it in my heart.
And while you’re at it, I could use
The strength for a brand new start.

It’s time to run my race again.
I’ve laid aside “the weight”  (Heb. 12:1)
I’m on the starting line again,
And off for Heaven’s gate!

Joy in the Journey

a word from our Pastor...
John MacArthur

"My favorite definition of JOY is this…JOY is the flag that flies on the castle of the heart when the King is in residence there.

HAVE A BLESSED RESURRECTION DAY!

The Basis of True Christian JOY
John MacArthur

“The Christian life is neither entered nor lived on the basis of good feelings or attractive inclinations but on the basis of God’s truth in Christ. Christians who rely on self-oriented emotions instead of Scripture-oriented minds are doomed to be ‘tossed here and there by  waves, and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of  men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming’ (Eph. 4:14)….The faithful, effective Christian life,…is not simply a great emotional adventure filled with wonderful feelings and experiences. It is first of all the humble pursuit of God’s truth and will and of conformity to it. The obedient Christian experiences JOY and satisfaction beyond measure, far exceeding that of superficial believers who constantly seek spiritual ‘highs.’ Life in Christ is not sterile and joyless. But true JOY, happiness, satisfaction, and all other such feelings are by-products of  knowing and obeying God’s truth.”

from: John MacArthur, The MacArthur New Testament Commentary: Galatians (Chicago: Moody, 1987) p. 64

14 Things that can Steal your JOY!

  1. • False Conversion – You are a false convert to Christ, you are not truly born again
  2. • Satan & Demons

  3. • Not understanding God’s Sovereignty – He is in Total control

  4. • Prayerlessness – Not going to the Lord in prayer

  5. • A low after a Spiritual High – e.g Monday after Sunday

  6. • Circumstance Orientation – Your circumstances dictate your joy

  7. • Ingratitude – Not being thankful

  8. • Forgetfulness - Forgetting what Christ has saved you from

  9. • Dissatisfaction with your earthly condition – what you have, where you live, how you look

  10. • Fear of the future – The “What If” syndrome

  11. • You Live by Uncontrolled feelings – You don’t take captive your thought life

  12. • Morbid self analysis – Self centered continual focus on your faults

  13. • Self Centered – When it’s all about you and your needs

  14. • Guilt – unwilling to forgive yourself even though God has.
