EIP-AGRI workshops on establishing Operational Groups in Slovenia and Estonia
As the programming of the EIP-AGRI under Rural Development is at its final stages in many Member States, DG Agriculture and Rural Development is organising a series of workshops focussing on the practical aspects of establishing Operational Groups under the national and regional Rural Development Programmes (RDPs). Two workshops have taken place this month in Ljubljana (Slovenia) and Tallinn (Estonia) with participants from Slovenia, Croatia, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Estonia, Denmark, Sweden Finland, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland. The majority of the participants were representatives of active stakeholder organisations in the EIP-AGRI network. They were specifically invited as potential "EIP-AGRI multipliers" that could take home and disseminate the knowledge, experience and ideas shared in the workshop. Presentations of inspirational best practices and think tanks on questions such as “What are the main challenges that need to be addressed for setting up Operational Groups?” gave participants new insights into how to set up Operational Groups.

Organic EIP-AGRI Facebook Group
After the workshop in Tallinn the Finnish Organic Association created a public Organic EIP-AGRI Facebook Group to share international ideas and opinions, to start an Operational Group, to co-work and to co-learn.

EIP-AGRI Workshops on establishing Operational Groups: next in Czech Republic and France
A total of five EIP-AGRI workshops have been planned, each grouping together several EU Member States. Three of them have already taken place and the final two will be held in the Czech Republic and in France in May:
- 6/7 May 2014: Prague, Czech Republic. Hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture of the Czech Republic through the Managing Authority for the Rural Development Programme. The participants will come from Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Ireland, the Netherlands, Slovakia and the United Kingdom.
- 21/22 May 2014: Paris, France. Hosted by the French Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry. The participants will come from France, Italy, Romania, Belgium and Luxembourg.

Copernicus & Galileo reward your
innovative agricultural ideas
Galileo is Europe’s own global navigation satellite system. The European Satellite Navigation Competition (ESNC) is looking for forward-thinking Galileo Applications for agriculture. Innovative products and services designed to enhance everyday life with the help of satellite navigation can win more than 30 prizes with a total value of 1 million Euros. In addition to cash prizes, participants can profit primarily from the assistance in implementing their business models. Participants can also benefit from working closely with key experts and leading affiliated institutions around the world, stepping into the international limelight and sharing their products or service with a wider audience in Europe and beyond. The competition is open to everyone and invites anyone who is interested in participating to sign up from 1 April to 30 June 2014 at www.galileo-masters.eu
The Earth Monitoring Competition: Copernicus Masters is awarding prizes to innovative solutions for business and society based on Earth observation data. In 2014, the Copernicus Masters is being held on a world-wide scale for the first time. The competition is organised through exciting topic-specific challenges supported by an impressive list of ‘challenge partners’ (e.g. the CloudEO Farming Challenge). The solutions within each category are awarded with various prizes. Submission is possible from 15 April to 13 July at www.copernicus.masters.com

New AKIS report calls for changes in research and innovation policy
The Agriculture Knowledge and Innovation Systems (AKIS) subgroup of the Standing Committee on Agricultural Research (SCAR) has published a report on research and innovation policy which put forward ten recommendations to make research more responsive to innovation processes. Read more |

Estonian potatoes and automatic weather stations: beating the late blight disease
With more than 50 million tons produced annually, potatoes are still an important crop in the EU. However, it can be quite vulnerable to diseases such as the potato late blight, which can lead to yield and quality losses that can exceed 50%. This is a problem that also affects Estonian potato farmers, For the Estonian farmers cooperative CA Talukartul, they looked into controlling the disease, but that meant increasing the number of fungicide applications during the season, and more fungicides also means an increased risk to the environment and human health and higher production costs. The cooperative wanted to find a solution without an unnecessary increase of fungicides. During the farming trials for fungicide applications in 2011 the results were positive: an additional income for farmers from 88-1373 EUR/ha. An average additional yearly income for farmers throughout the whole project period of 2011-2013 was 242,2 EUR/ha. Read more on the innovative actions they took to get this result here. |
