Check out the upcoming events at
First Unitarian Church of Baltimore!
Events for Wednesday, April 16
through Tuesday, April 21
Dear <<First Name>>!

On Sunday May 4th we will celebrate the famous "Baltimore Sermon" given by William Ellery Channing from our pulpit on May 5, 1819 at the Ordination of Jared Sparks as our first minister. This "Unity Service"-formerly the Union Service- will be held at 4 pm in the afternoon. We hope the change of time will allow a larger attendance from other congregations. As in the past, we will have combined choirs and singers.  Any and all are invited to sing with us.  A rehearsal will be held from 2 until 3:30 pm before the service on that day. Interested persons should contact me, James Houston, by phone -410-225-3269, email-jhouston@ccbcmd.edu, or talk to me after church on Sunday. So-come make music with us.

CHURCH “FUN” FOR YOUNG PLEDGER

Twelve-year-old Owen Sahnow enjoys the people he's grown up with at First Unitarian. “They're the kind of people I like to hang out with,” says the seventh grader who pledges half his allowance to the church every week. Owen is busy with school, sports and hobbies like juggling, unicycling and music; but he also participates in almost all aspects of church life and is a member of this year's Coming of Age program. “If we had better advertising I think we could handle more people,” says Owen who dreams of a future with more church families and more youth in the Religious Education program.

His advice for First Unitarian members who are considering their canvass pledges right now?

“Think about something you would like to see in our church. You could make that happen.”

Adult Religious Education Exploration with the Minister on Wednesday, April 16 at 7 p.m.

“Meaning My Most: Relationality and Power”
Rev. David Carl Olson
Five Wednesdays beginning March 26
7-8:30 p.m. (bread and soup offered at 6:30)

Religious communities like ours are places where people build relationships. Many relationships are simple and uncomplicated, others offer deeper mutuality and intimacy, just a few may grow to contain vibrancy and power. This series of conversations and activities with our minister will reveal the ways that he makes meaning of his life, and may offer you a place to think about what most makes meaningful sense to you.

There will always be soup and bread available before the class. You are welcome to come at 6:30 to help serve and share.

Location: Parish Hall

Maundy Thursday "Love Feast" on April 17 at 7 p.m.

The stories about Jesus and his followers say that he met with them in an upper room for an evening of food and drink, of conversation and camaraderie. Some stories say that this was the night when Jesus was betrayed and abandoned by his friends.

Under the Tiffany mosaic of the Last Supper in our Chancel, around our flaming Chalice, we will listen to the stories of Jesus and his friends. We will share a simple meal of pits bread and hummus, olives and grape leaves, sparkling water and wine. We will sing songs and psalms, read from the Bible and recite prayers. By candlelight, we will break bread together and open our hearts to fellowship and meditation.

A donation will be received to pay for the food and drink provided.

Please call the church office at (410) 685-2330 so that we may plan the meal. Reservation deadline is April 16
.

From the Social Action Clearinghouse

We are now selling Fair Trade Chocolate from the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC), our denomination's service organization.  The chocolate is delicious and is made from cacao only from small farmer co-ops.  Please stop by the UUSC table during coffee hour to learn more about the work of this organization in our country and other countries.  We  also have information available about membership in this organization that helps us live our UU values. contact: Roberta, msvee505@gmail.com.

Thank You for Your Service!

I'm not sure if everyone knows, but Andre and Laurel Mendes have been donating bagels and cream cheese for our coffee hour after services for...well, as long as I've been here!

Genie Eldorado came to me about six months ago to volunteer to do dishes and clean the kitchen after coffee hour. Genie has been there every Sunday since and has even helped clean up after special events too!

Terry Lang has help in numerous ways. After she scraped the old paint off the sanctuary floor when the carpet was removed, she asked if there was anything she could help with in the kitchen. Terry helped clean out all the cupboards and still comes by during the week to straighten up anything that's left after Sunday activities.

From all of us, to each of you...all of our love and appreciation!

HELP THEIR GARDEN GROWN

Let's all join forces on Unity Saturday, May 3, 2014 to build and plant a vegetable garden at Dayspring transitional housing in East Baltimore. The 18 families who live in this urban food desert, all have histories of homelessness and substance abuse.

We have the opportunity to help them.

On May 3, we invite Unitarians from throughout our region to bring their garden tools, their willing hands and generous hearts to a day of service that may change the lives of homeless children and their families.

Come by the Poverty and Homelessness Ministry table to find out ways you can be part of creating a garden at Dayspring!
Our Change for Change Partner for March and April
Our Change for Change partner during March & April is the Ed McNally Memorial Fund.  Honoring the remarkable life of the Franciscan Center of Baltimore's director who lost his battle with lymphoma at age 46, the Fund supports social justice leadership development and programs addressing the needs of impoverished people in Baltimore.

More information is available during fellowship hour at the Social Action Clearinghouse table.

The Committee on Ministry to Conduct Ministerial Review

Every three years the Committee on Ministry conducts a review of the work of our Minister. To do this review we interview a number of people in our congregation. If you would like to share your input in this process, please let us know. We will host a group discussion after church on April 13th (12:30-1:30, first floor classrooms) where we will be happy to hear from any church member or church friend interested in taking part in this process. We intend to collect information during March and April and to compile our report in May. For more information feel free to contact me (molly.ruhlman@gmail.com) or to reach out to any of the other Committee on Ministry members: Mike Cross-Barnett, Gina Foringer, CJ Austin, Judi Tenhunen, and Judy Mayer.
