ABOUT BLACK GIRLS ROCK! QUEENS' CAMP FOR LEADERSHIP & EXCELLENCE
This summer, BLACK GIRLS ROCK! Inc. will host a cohort of dynamic girls from around the world at its 4th annual BLACK GIRLS ROCK! QUEENS’ CAMP FOR LEADERSHIP & EXCELLENCE. This two-week overnight leadership development immersion program is for girls between the ages 13-17. The camp will take place from July 18th-August 2nd at BARNARD COLLEGE and COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY in the City of New York.

The BLACK GIRLS ROCK! Queens' Camp for Leadership and Excellence features programs that boost confidence and self-esteem by enabling girls to cultivate or refine their writing, public speaking, media literacy, critical thinking, creativity and innovation processes. In addition, the camp teaches girls the importance of sisterhood and service to others while also emphasizing the significance of excellence and self-determination. 

Hosting the two-week leadership camp at Columbia University's campus will bring attendees closer to the elements of academia, the visual & performance art culture exhibited throughout New York City, and gives our participants access to world class professors, educators, artists, activists, and entrepreneurs who will facilitate workshops throughout the immersion program. The camp features a plethora of courses including, signature BGR programs like: the BLACK GIRLS ROCK! DJ Turntable Lab, 'Diggin’ in the Crates' music history workshops, the BGR! Empowerment Circle, Taste the World Culinary Series, BGR! Guitar Clinic, leadership forums, financial literacy sessions, spoken word, creative writing, yoga, African dance, and more.


The BLACK GIRLS ROCK! QUEENS' CAMP FOR LEADERSHIP AND EXCELLENCE exposes young women to important life knowledge, but also helps participants refine vital qualities such as self-confidence, team-work and active leadership. Campers leave feeling a deeper commitment to sisterhood, academic excellence, creative integrity, professional goal setting, humanitarianism and their own social responsibilities.


APPLICATIONS
The priority deadline for applications is 11:59PM on Wednesday April 16, 2014. However, our selection committee will collect and review rolling applications up until Wednesday April 30th, 2014. We strongly advise applicants to submit their information early. You may download the application here.

Through a highly competitive selection process BLACK GIRLS ROCK! will handpick a cohort of exemplary teenage girls who are in good academic standing, exhibit strong leadership capabilities, and who have a vested interest in their personal and professional development, civic engagement, and absolving socio-cultural issues impacting women and girls around the world.

What is BLACK GIRLS ROCK! Queens’ Camp for Leadership and Excellence?

BLACK GIRLS ROCK! Inc. is a 501(c)3 nonprofit youth empowerment and mentoring organization. The Queens Camp for Leadership and Excellence offers a truly dynamic experience where junior high and high school students are able to live on a collegiate campus and engage in enrichment activities that will strengthen their leadership and academic skills. Why should we choose BLACK GIRLS ROCK! Queens’ Camp? What types of programs are offered at Queens’ Camp for Leadership and Excellence?

BLACK GIRLS ROCK! Queens’ Camp is an intensive that attracts outstanding candidates from around the world. Our dynamic curriculum offers skills in diverse disciplines including Research, Technology, Communications, and the Arts. In addition, Queens’ Camp Alumnae benefit from continued mentorship, college prep assistance, and scholarships.

How are girls selected to participate in this program?

BLACK GIRLS ROCK! Queens’ Camp has  a competitive application process. A credentialed selection committee reviews all completed applications received before April 16, 2014. Rolling Applications will be reviewed on a first come first serve basis up until April 30, 2014. Accepted campers are notified by June 9, 2014.

What are the eligibility requirements?

Eligible candidates are:

  • Girls between ages 13-17 (applicants must be 13+ by the start of camp). Note: 2014 graduating seniors are not eligible to apply. Adults, 18+, are not eligible to apply. 
  • Students who are in good academic standing
  • Students who have an invested interest in
    • the African Diaspora and its arts, histories, and cultures
    • Civic engagement
    • Scholarship
    • Global sisterhood
    • Leadership Development
  •  Students who have a concern for global issues, particularly those impacting Black women and girls
  • Girls who have been identified as leaders or who display strong leadership capabilities

If interested candidates are twelve (12) years old can they still apply?

Twelve-year-old applicants must be thirteen by the camp start date: July 2014. 

What items should be included in the completed application?

You should include the following items in your completed application packet:

  • Completed Application Form
  • Completed and edited Short Answer Questions and Essay
  • Video Blog [Options: YouTube Video/Vimeo link, CD, Flash Drive, E-mail WMV]
  • Transcript
  • 2 Recommendations
  • Health Form 

When and where does the camp take place?

The Queens’ Camp is a two week leadership intensive program, which takes place in July/August in the city of New York.

How much does the camp cost?

The activities fee for the overnight camp is $500 (round trip travel is not included in this fee). Note that financial assistance is available by application only. Accepted applicants may request a financial aid application for our need-based scholarships. The true cost of camp per attendee is $2,500. However, we have significantly subsidized this amount, enabling families to better afford summer camp.

Are there scholarships? Is financial aid offered?

In the event that you cannot afford the subsidized cost please contact us for financial assistance, which is available by application only. Accepted applicants may request a financial aid application for our need-based scholarships!
