NEWS IN AND AROUND DOWNTOWN
New Businesses in Downtown Joplin
  • Club XO officially opened last month at the corner of 5th and Joplin.  There is a great new patio on the backside of the building facing the alley!
  • Sophie Shoes is moving to 531 S Main Street in May.  JHAP will move from their first floor location to the third floor of the Ramsey Building.
  • Keep your eyes open for The Grind's Grand Opening.  It will be a coffee lounge on the back side of Joplin Avenue Coffee Company.
  • TableMesa is rebranding!  Joplin TableMesa will switch to FORK AMERICAN KITCHEN+BAR, with the goal of bringing more local tastes the second week of May.

Celebrating A Local Son and His Art -- 125th Birthday of Thomas Hart Benton 
City Hall

The City of Joplin, Spiva Center for the Arts and the Joplin Convention and Visitors Bureau are happy to partner to bring to Joplin, a public exhibit of a collection of works by Neosho native Thomas Hart Benton. 2014 will mark the 125th year of Mr. Benton birth. Thomas Hart Benton is a world renowned Missouri painter and muralist, whose work was at the forefront of a period of American art known as the Regionalist art movement. The exhibit will open on April 15th, celebrating Mr. Benton’s 125th birthday and run through May 11th. In conjunction with the Benton exhibit will be a display of work submitted by regional 11th and 12th grade students. Both exhibits will be displayed on the 1st floor of the Joplin City Hall and can be viewed during normal hours, Monday thru Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Weekend viewing will be by appointment only by calling 417-625-4789.

Downtown YMCA
Dress up as a character from the book and get ready for a good time as we target early childhood literacy! Target Kids' Reading Nights are held at 5:30pm the 3rd Tuesday of the month at the South Branch and the 3rd Wednesday of the month at the Downtown YMCA. Call 417 781 9622 for more information!

Third Thursday

Celebrating Third Thursday's Seventh Season. Third Thursday was founded in 2008 and is Joplin's trademark cultural event. On the fourth Thursday of the month, we’ll showcase a different movie from previous decades. This month's is a 1982 swashbuckling parody of a Gilbert and Sullivan play featuring high seas neer-do-wells.
 
May 1
FilmSpiva 48-Hour Film Competition
6pm

Previously known as the 48-Hour Film Competition, FilmSpiva enters a new phase with a new name, but the same rules apply.  Groups of film makers are challenged to write, shoot, edit and deliver a film in 48 hours.Groups are to meet at Spiva Center for the Arts at 6pm on Thursday, May 1 at 6pm to receive a prompt with a location, prop, and line that must be used in the film along with stipulations about music use, copyright, etc. The finished films will be screened on a loop at Central Christian Center at 415 S. Main St. during the May 15 Third Thursday Art Walk in Downtown Joplin. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place will be voted on by the public.  There is a $10 entry fee per group.

Yoga for Kids

Downtown Yoga, 4th and Virginia 

Ages 7-12.  Kids Yoga is where children learn yoga poses, apply those poses to games and activities and work on breath.  By donation.  All proceeds benefit Art Feeds.
