UR Engineering Undergrads: Enter the Forbes Competition by April 21

Full-time undergraduate engineering or applied sciences students can apply and compete in the Charles and Janet Forbes Entrepreneurial Competition by submitting a plan for a technical business. Cash prizes will be awarded to top teams. Send business plans electronically to susanna.virgilio@rochester.edu by 4 p.m. Monday, April 21. Tim Talley ’88: An Entrepreneurial Journey on ABC’s Shark Tank

Tim Talley ’88 (BS in Electrical Engineering), founder of U-Lace, a company that produces customized laces for sneakers, who recently received an investment from Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban during his appearance on ABC’s “Shark Tank,” will give a talk on his entrepreneurial journey on Wednesday, April 23 at 4:45 p.m. in Schlegel 407. The talk is free and open to the University community and the general public. A reception and meet and greet with the speaker will follow in the Eisenberg Rotunda. Attendees must register in advance online or call 276-3500.


Student Incubator Panel Event on 4/22

Learn what it’s like to be in the University of Rochester Student Incubator at High Tech Rochester on Tuesday, April 22 from 4:40 to 5:40 p.m. in Gleason 118. Panelists include Simon MBA candidate Margaret Feldman, founder of Feldman College Advising; senior Felix Kim, founder of Ovitz; and Simon MBA candidate Stacey Lampell, founder of CityWhisk. The event will be moderated by Bob Kot, Director of New Ventures at HTR. Attendees must register online.


Registration Open for Rochester Startup Weekend: April 25-27

Startup Weekends are 54-hour events where developers, designers, marketers, product managers and startup enthusiasts come together to share ideas, form teams, build products, and launch startups (typically mobile apps). The second biennial Rochester Startup Weekend will be held on April 25-27, 2014 at Brand Networks. Online registration is now open. A fee applies. Students can use the promo code "STUDENT" to receive half off the price of admission. Additionally, UR students who register are eligible to be reimbursed an additional $25 through the Center for Entrepreneurship.


Kalmbach Lecture featuring Mark Kirsch Open to UR Community on 5/1

The Simon Entrepreneurs Association proudly presents a Kalmbach Lecture, “Entrepreneurship & Starting a Franchise Business,” featuring Mr. Mark Kirsch '80 (BA), Principal Attorney, Gray, Plant, Mooty on Thursday, May 1 from noon to 1:00 p.m. in Gleason Hall 118. The event is free and open the UR community. Refreshments will be served and business casual attire is requested. Please register by emailing cfe@rochester.edu. Parking passes will be provided to those who register in advance. 


Students: Get Your Venture Funded through NCIIA

Are you part of a university-based, student-led team developing a technology that solves important problems for people or the planet? Are you interested in figuring out a revenue-generating approach to getting your product into the market? Then apply online for entry into the NCIIA E-Team Program. The program offers:

  • Up to $25K in grant funding
  • Training and coaching on commercialization and venture development
  • $50K investment opportunity for eligible teams
  • Entry into a network of like-minded student entrepreneurs
  • Access to experts, advisors, and mentors
  • Opportunity to participate in the national Open Mids innovator showcase
The next deadlines to apply are May 9, 2014 and October 3, 2014.

43NORTH: $1 Million Business Plan Competition 

Do you have the next great business idea? 43NORTH is awarding $5 million in cash prizes – including a top prize of $1 million – to the best entrepreneurs, startups and teams from around the world. Enter the competition online by May 31, 2014.


UR Students: Apply to the Student Incubator

The University of Rochester has opened student incubator space at High Tech Rochester, made possible by Simon alumnus Mark S. Ain ’67S (MBA). Student Incubator companies will have access to all client amenities within the HTR Lennox Tech Enterprise Center, as well as access to High Tech Rochester’s Director of New Ventures and Entrepreneurs-in-Residence, who can provide additional coaching, mentoring, and connections. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis; Rochester students at any level of study can apply. The incubator is accessible on the bus loop.
