Parent Survey-5Essentials
As of April 18, the parent response rate at Clarendon Hills Middle School is only 5% for the Illinois 5Essentials Parent Survey. As a reminder, schools need 30% of their parents to respond in order to receive a report. This report will be really valuable for our school and me.  Please consider taking 5 minutes right now and completing the parent survey at https://illinois.5-essentials.org.  (The survey is not very mobile-friendly so to make it easier and quicker, please use a PC, laptop or Ipad.) The window this year closes on April 25.

Digital Citizenship Assembly on April 22nd
On April 22, the CHMS students will see a presentation on digital citizenship from a representative from the Attorney General’s office.  This presentation is one we have done for many years now and provides the students with additional information about how to be safe and appropriate while on-line.  We will email you the special schedule for lunch times and class time on Monday.  Below are some highlights in the past:

  • You are moving in a public environment...you are online with everyone...things can spread around the world without your consent...
  • Once you post something online, you lose control of it...it can be copied, saved, and forwarded
  • Make sure what you are posting is appropriate for everyone and anyone's eyes
  • Once you post something you can't take it back...the internet does not have an eraser...it is like writing with a permanent marker...
  • Password Privacy...make you password complicated...use different passwords for different accounts...only share it with your parents
  • Think about the people you choose to interact with on the internet/cell...who are they?  Who do you trust?  How do we make ourselves vulnerable?
  • What kind of info are you posting...how does it you and what kind of does it tell about you ()
  • Use the same level of integrity with this technology that you would use face to face

    Illinois Youth Survey
Student in 6th and 8th grade will be taking a survey in coordination with the Center for Prevention Research and Development at the University of Illinois on Tuesday, April 22nd.  Parents of 6th and 8th grade students should have received an email last week with more information.

The survey will ask students about: personal use of alcohol and other drugs, perception of risks, where accessed, consequences of use, approval or disapproval of use; students' feelings about their school experience; family and personal characteristics; family communication about substance use; feeling about self and moods; and student health behaviors – food intake, exercise, height and weight.  The survey is completely voluntary and privacy will be strictly protected.  If there are any questions your child does not wish to answer, he/she is free to skip questions and they may stop taking survey at any time they choose. Students who do not wish to participate in the survey or stop participating or whose parents choose to deny permission for their participation will be provided with an appropriate alternative activity (e.g. reading in the school library or quiet reading) while the surveys are being administered. The staff handing out surveys will remind students of these rights before the survey begins.

The survey will be administered to 6th and 8th grade students on Tuesday, April 22nd.  I apologize for the relatively short notice about this survey, but we wanted to take advantage of an opportunity to conduct the survey on a day that we are already running an alternate schedule for an assembly and we would not be losing instructional time.  If you DO NOT want your child to participate in the survey or if you have any questions, please contact Joni Sherman at jsherman@d181.org.

CHMS Art Teacher, Jean Fitzgerald, was flown to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, this past February as part of a Samba Dance delegation representing Chicago. She was awarded a grant from the Robert Sterling Clark Foundation and the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago. She and her fellow "Samba Sisters" performed in the Carnival parades of Rio. Musicians and dancers from Brazil will be visiting Chicago this summer as part of the International arts exchange. Jean Fitzgerald brought back great stories of being on television, dancing in front of 100,000 people, and experiencing the fantastic sights and sounds of Brazil. She even managed to fit her big showy costume onto the plane and bring it to school to show CHMS students. Bom Carnivale!
