Drowned in April

...plus the best records and reads of March 2014.

Sean Adams, DiS Editor: Before I begin this update featuring March's must-hear longplayers and share a selection of editorial that you might have missed, we have a little something to ask.

As you may be aware, last year DiS had a facelift. Partly we did this because the old site was a bit of mess (especially beneath the surface), but mostly because advertising formats had massively changed, and we were losing out on income by not supporting these new-fangled formats. This overhaul was quite costly, and we still have several things to do.

DiS has always been a free service and - like most websites - we rely upon advertising revenue, which sadly can be quite unpredictable. Last year, despite huge numbers of visitors (approximately 3.5million music fans), we lost money for the first time in our 14-year history due to poor advertising income and the high costs of the rebuild. The first third of this year hasn't been much better, and we still have a lot of redevelopment work to do.

Hearing about our predicament, a few of our community members suggested we set-up a donation button on the site. After I tentatively posted a link on the boards our regulars raised over £1000. We were blown away and incredibly grateful for your support, especially as this amount almost covered last month's server bill and allowed us to make a few urgent fixes to the site.

Inspired by tip jar's on various other websites, we have started a whip-round, and we would grateful for any funds you can donate to help us continue to provide the free service to which you've become accustomed. Please head over here to contribute if you can.

War on Drugs - Lost In the Dream

March's Must Hear LPs

At the start of this year, our forum members started a new monthly poll to vote for an album of the month. For March, they appear to have agreed with our glowing review and they have gone for the sun-dappled Americana of The War on Drugs' Lost in the Dream. See what else people are loving in this voting thread.

At DiS HQ we're (well, I am) currently nuts about the new albums from EMA and LIARS, which both sound like a fight with a robot and leave you with the after taste of its wiry bone marrow (tastes like battery sweat). Reviews of both of these feature in our recommended records section.

Kate Bush

March's Must Reads

If you read one-piece this month, make sure it's J.R.'s thoughts on how Liars have set the blueprint for band transformations, especially those who "go electronic"

Of course, March's BIG STORY was the return of Kate Bush. Our reviews editor Andrzej Lukowski, who's a Kate Bush super-fan, pondered what sort of show we may have booked for.

Speaking of legends, we sent Ed Harcourt to meet the songwriters' songwriter Jimmy Webb. Yeah, him who wrote the greatest song ever written ('Wichita Lineman', obviously!). Read their chat about songwriting here.

We also caught up with Peter Hook, Future Islands, Rufus Wainwright, The Cardigans' Nina Persson, and Jazz Monroe went to Tallinn to hang out with Pussy Riot. You'll find all of these pieces and more in our Recent Recommended Reading section.
