Do you ever wonder when medicines or antibiotics are truly necessary? Can antibiotics be unsafe, and can some medical tests cause harm? The answer is yes! The Choosing Wisely campaign has been in the news a lot recently and is encouraging patients to think about what medical tests and procedures may be unnecessary and even, in some cases, cause harm. To date, 50 medical specialties have joined the campaign. Here are some key points:

Free Produce Giveaway on April 16th
On April 16th there will be a free produce giveaway at Hilltonia United Methodist Church on 514 Columbian Avenue in Grove City from 3:30-6:00 pm. This produce giveaway is scheduled to happen at this church every 3rd Wednesday of the month. Call (614) 274-8683 for details.

Free Legal Help on Thursday, April 17th at Crossroads United Methodist Church
Free legal services will be offered from 5:30-7 pm Thursday, April 17th at Crossroads United Methodist Church at 1100 South Hague, on the west side of Columbus.  Call the church at (614) 274-4920 for more information.

Asian Health Fair Saturday, April 26th
As part of minority health month, the 2014 Asian Health Fair will be held on Saturday, April 26 at Bethel United Methodist Church from 10 am until 2 pm. They will provide free health screenings and educational materials, as well as a cooking demonstrations and an opportunity to win raffle prizes! Admission is FREE! It is sponsored by Asian American Community Services (AACS).

Community Drug Disposal Day Saturday, April 26th
In an effort to prevent teen prescription drug abuse, another community-wide disposal day is coming up on April 26th. Consumers are encouraged to drive through the Kroger parking lot and drop off their medications to the Franklin County Sheriff Deputies at one of 4 Kroger Locations. They will accept all unused and expired medications, including pills, liquids, gels, and patches. Find out more. 

Summer Leadership Program for Rising 11th & 12th Graders
Students entering the 11th or 12th grade in the fall of 2014 are encouraged to apply to participate in The Ohio State University Summer Residential Program. This 2-week program (June 15-27)  is being offered by the Department of African American and African Studies, and the theme this year is Leadership Development in the Black Community. The deadline to apply is May 16th. Find out more

Job Fair for Latinos on Tuesday, April 29th
Don't miss the Annual Latino Job Fair at 10 am on April 29th at the Holiday Inn. Over 40 companies will be in attendance, representing a broad spectrum of industries. Find out more at www.diversitylatino.com

Understanding Ohio's New Adoption Laws
Ohio's Adoption Laws have recently changed. Find out more at ohiobirthparents.org, join one of the various local support groups for birth parents and adoptive parents or view their guides for adoptees and birthparents.

Summer Program at St. Vincent's for Kids with Behavioral Issues
The summer program is a fun summer experience for kids with behavioral issues who need a more structured environment during the summer. The program starts on June 9th, but space is limited so register early. Children learn anger management, problem solving and more. For more information, call (614) 824-KIDS.

New NAMI Mentor Program
The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) has a new Family Mentor Program. Family Mentors are NAMI members who have a loved one with mental illness, who have experienced  challenges caused by their loved one's mental illness, and who have a desire to help a caregiver navigate through them. Family Mentors receive a stipend and training from The Mentoring Center of Central Ohio for their commitment to the program. Call the NAMI Frankilin County office, 614-501-6264, and press 4 to get detailed information about the program.

Dare to Dream: An Evening of Public Awareness about Male Sexual Victimization on April 16th
The Center for Family Safety and Healing will host the screening of the documentary, Boys and Men Healing. A panel discussion and community conversation about healing and the resources available for male survivors and their loved ones will follow. The program will run from 5:30-8pm, with doors open at 5pm. Light snacks will be provided and CEUs will be available. Due to limited seating, registration is required. 5th Annual Pediatric Asthma Conference
Nationwide Children's Hospital is sponsoring the 2014 Pediatric Asthma Conference, May 1-2. This event is for physicians, family practitioners, nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacy and clinical staff from hospital, urgent care and primary care facilities with pediatric asthma patients. Topics to be addressed include:  Disparities in Healthcare, Obesity and Asthma, Inner City Asthma and Non-adherence to Therapy.  For more information, call (614) 355-0676 or visit www.nationwidechildrens.org/conferences.

Wear Blue to Prevent Child Abuse
The Center for Family Safety & Healing will honor Child Abuse Prevention Month by wearing blue each Wednesday in April to support prevention and raise awareness. Learn more about programs at the Center for Family Safety & Healing.
