Attention ALL Junior Members

NEW Junior Squash Programme

The Junior Squash Programme kicks off at the start of Term 2 on 7 May. It will run from 4.30 - 5.30 pm each Wednesday throughout the term. It will then continue through Term 3. The programme which has been developed by Squash NZ specifically for juniors will be run by our current professional squash coach Gary Aukett and costs $80 per term. Gary will be assisted by Tohe Wanoa (our top junior squash player and current squash club champ).

Junior memberships include squash so we encourage all of our juniors to have a go. Contrary to what you may have been told, learning to play squash does not ruin your tennis. In fact it will help you to maintain or improve your fitness, increase your explosiveness on the court and enhance your tactical appreciation of both games. If you want to see the evidence of this simply look at the club honours board and youâ€™ll see that we have had players who have been the tennis and squash club champions at the same time. Two examples are Tony Naughton and our current menâ€™s tennis champion Chris Roy.

Tennis Club Championship Results

The annual tennis club champs was held during late March and early April and culminated in a happy frenzy of tennis playing and watching on the weekend of 5-6 April. Huge thanks to Maria Buchanan, Kathryn Hazlewood and Paul Hodder for coordinating the 130 or so entries! Congratulations to all those that entered and the winners, who were as follows:

Constitution Changes

The management committee are currently updating the constitution of the club.
The existing constitution dates back to the 1970â€™s and is geared towards the club as it was then, when it had more than 400 squash members and a waiting list to join. It has multiple positions on the management, tennis and squash committees that havenâ€™t existed for many years and are no longer relevant to the way the club operates today.
We will be putting the revised constitution before the members at the AGM this year and seeking their approval. We will provide a copy of the old version so that it is clear what has changed.
The important thing is that the objectives of the club, as stated by the people who founded it, have not changed and the constitution is unchanged in this regard.

C-P-C Walk

Cheers to D.I.C, Kojak, Mike, Bullet, Harry and Wellington's wonderful weather for an absolutely superb Club-Pub-Club walk.

The conditions, learnings, adventures and exercise were awesome. Not to forget the different beverages and the top â€œHurricanesâ€ win.

NO PARKING

A reminder to all members NOT to park in the carpark area marked with yellow lines. This is a no parking area so that vehicles can turn.
If there are no parks left you will have to park on the street.

Squash News

Winter Interclub

Teams are due by 01 May, which means it will likely start on 15 May. I will have the sign up sheets and website sign up up by Friday. For the women, please remember that you can opt to play in the Mens division should you choose to. Depending on the number of Mens teams vs Womens teams and Masters teams, some of the Mens teams may play on a Wednesday

Island Bay Open

The Open was set in the calendar for the first weekend in May. There are 2 major tournaments on around the country which have taken a number of players out of our draws as they have already committed elsewhere. We have made the decision to move the Open to July in place of the B and Below. Further details will follow soon.

District Superchamps

Hosts for the 2014 District Super Champs:
B Grade: Khandallah
C Grade: Kapiti- along with Waikane co-hosting
D Grade: Thorndon
E Grade Wainuiomata
F Grade: We havenâ€™t had entries for F grade in the past 2 years. If we do this year, these matches are likely to be hosted at Khandallah

Cut off for grading is 30^th May â€“ I.e. you must be on your clubs grading list on this date.

Winter Tennis

Makere will be continuing tennis activities over the winter months with the following sessions planned:

Active:

Monday - Mens - 6pm @ Renouf centre
Tuesday - Womens - 6pm @ Renouf centre
Monday - Mid week ladies - 9.30am - Island Bay

Coaching:

Starts Term 2 - 5th May. Group sessions run Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursdays.
Private coaching available Mon - Fri.

School Holiday Camp:

29th, 30th, 1st
Hot Shots: 9.30 - 11am
Squad: 11.30 - 1pm
