March Highlights
  • Sponsored by Planet Wheeler Foundation, Gaya and Indira continue their workshops on M & E assessments, selection criteria and course curriculum.
  • The first ever Festival of Cricket, Australia which took place in Melbourne  on the 10th March with the participation of old boys from 16 schoolswas a great success, raising money for the 2014 Murali Harmony Cup.
  • FoG trustee Muthiah Muralidaran visited Al Diyafah High School, Dubai who gifted 50 solar powered lanterns to rural families in Northern Sri Lanka.
  • A delegation of students from the University of Yale visited the MCC Centre of Excellence in Seenigama.
  • FoG visited many villages in the East including Aralaganwila distributing computers, musical instruments, sports equipment, grocery packs and Essential School Supplies Packs. For more details please see the North Journey So Far (NJSF) update.
  • Also included in the NJSF are news of the bike distribution and new Water & Sanitation projects taking place in the North, be sure to catch up on the updates.
  • A special Women's Day workshop was conducted by the Community psycho social unit who have had an active month conducting workshops about the use of social media and parent-child relationships etc.
  • The Children’s Goodness Club conducted a Bodhi Pooja, Ashirwada Seth Pooja and organized an Alms Giving at the Wellawatta Elders' Home.
  • Empowering Sri Lanka First, an Initiative of Aitken Spence PLC launches 3 Kids Computer Centres in Mawaramandiya, Ahungalla and Dambulla for which Foundation of Goodness recruited and trained IT Lecturers.
  • Following distribution in the North and East distribution of books donated by ‘Help A Child Donate A Book’ further contributions continue across South and Central Sri Lanka (in Seenigama, Akurala, Kahawa, Rathgama and Haputhale).
  • A water pump was presented to a rehabilitated beneficiary in the North with funds donated by Greg Chappell and the Australian U19 team.
  • 3 community sports tours took place in March including the Old Royalists vs Old Anandians/FoG, Casey Cricket Academy Australia and the Western Australian Police Team.
  • Tove Ederstal and Biozone Scandanavia AB sponsor the retiling of floors at Anula Girls’ Home.
  • Priyangani Mushin conducted English training for FoG English Trainers over a number of months, voluntarily.
  • Oral Care programmes sponsored by Recycling4Smiles, initiated in August 2013, continue through 2014.
  • An updated state of the art beauty care facility is currently under construction.
  • Dive Seenigama, Dive Lanka are exploring opportunities towards moving their operations to the East during off-season in the South.
  • 26 Village Welfare projects amounting to Rs.375, 469/- were conducted to uplift the living standards of rural villagers. Please visit the FoG Welfare Wish List to find out how you can contribute.

Sector Spotlight: 
Sports Academy

Founded in 2007, the FoG Sports Academy concentrates on the mental, physical and social health of sports participants, and the development of life skills with key projects that serve up to 600 youth and children in the South annually as well as engaging in sports development workshops in the North. The Sports Academy conduct programmes for Cricket, Swimming, Volleyball, Badminton, Netball and Karate.
 

Sector Spotlight:
Elders' Care
The Foundation of Goodness supports the maintenance, development and welfare of residents in Elders' Homes in the southwest coast of Sri Lanka, including in Balapitiya, Wellawatte, Hikkaduwa, Rathgama and Polwatte. Emphasising the need for caring and respecting our elders the FoG conducts programmes which include medical camps, psycho-social support and counselling, alms givings and concerts. The Community Psycho-Social Team and Children's Goodness Club members work closely with these care homes and FoG volunteers find these visits to be a favorite pastime.
