PRISM Re-Launches Web Site!

Check out the updated PRISM website! It’s gotten a much needed make-over, and it is easier to navigate. Plus, in the coming months, you will find all sorts of added goodies: information about navigating grad and med school applications, career options, expanded mentor profiles, blogs on special interests, conference highlights, and much, much more! You can still find the usual necessities like applications, poster guidelines, proposal guidelines, and PRISM student expectations. Moving forward, we will rely heavily on the website for getting information out to our students and mentors, maybe even more so than our newsletters and Facebook page. So why not bookmark it now and become a regular visitor?

Symposium Poster Submission

How do you plan to spend your spring break?  Whether it’s chilling with your friends or feverishly working on your Symposium poster, if you’re participating in the May 1 Symposium then your poster is due  while you are on spring break .

Given the particularly large number of presenters this year, only posters submitted by  Wednesday, April 16 (noon) will be printed on the higher-quality department printer which was recently repaired.

If you submit your materials between April 16 and the final deadline of Wednesday, April 23, there is no guarantee your poster will be printed on the higher-quality machine.

Our last PRISM meeting was dedicated to effective poster creation and presentation.  We hope that the workshop, the posted guidelines, and your mentor’s guidance are all the tools you need to produce an amazing symposium poster.  Please remember to follow all of the submission procedures and guidelines, posted here on the new PRISM website.   If you have any questions, email PRISM@jjay.cuny.edu or stop by to see someone in the PRISM office.

Eugenia Salcedo Named 2014 Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher

Congratulations to Eugenia Salcedo, the winner of PRISM’s 2014 Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher Award! After an independent review of the nominations submitted by mentors, Eugenia was selected based on the work she conducts with her mentor, Dr. Jason Rauceo, her active role managing his lab, and the degree of skill advancement she has demonstrated during in her years in PRISM. While all of the candidates exceeded their mentors’ expectations in the categories of "Level of Commitment" and "Level of Progress," Eugenia had an edge in the categories of "Individual Initiative and Responsibility” and "Degree of Skill Advancement.” We congratulate all of the students who were nominated this year, and thank the mentors who took time to submit their nominations.

Symposium Attendance and RSVPs

Presenting Students – If you have not done so already, send us your RSVP. We are assuming your attendance, but you would like your official confirmation of this. If you have course conflict issues that you have been unable to resolve on your own, please mention this in your RSVP. Additionally, this is a last call for any presenting student who wishes to RSVP that a family member will be attending.

PRISM Students Who Have Completed a PRISM Research Training Workshop – Please RSVP immediately (yes or no) if you have not done so. If you plan to attend, please also indicate whether you will stay for the oral presentations/awards. Seating is limited for those sessions so we must plan accordingly. We encourage every one of you to come by the PRISM poster session for at least a brief time, if your schedule allows.

Other Students – You should have received an email inviting you to join us for the poster session of the PRISM Symposium. We regret that our room capacity prevents us from inviting you to attend the other sessions of the Symposium. Please make sure you have RSVP’d (yes or no) for the poster session as we consider it the last, albeit, unofficial meeting of the academic year
.

PRISM Attends the American Association of Forensic Science (AAFS) Conference

PRISM students, Stacey Ishmail, Kitty Law and Shoronia Cross and their mentors attended the AAFS Conference in Seattle, Washington. Shoronia, who works with Dr. Marcel Roberts, presented a poster, “Electrochemical Detection of Explosives and Their Metabolites in Fingerprint Sweat Using Molecularly-Imprinted Polyaniline Films," at this prestigious conference.  Professor Peter Diaczuk, who mentors Stacey and Kitty, presented on his work that demonstrates the potential to discriminate between shotgun shell buffer materials used in different ammunition types and manufacturers  The revamped PRISM website will now highlight PRISM students and mentors who attend conferences. Don’t forget to bring us back pictures from your trips so we can highlight you!

Summer Research Proposals Due in June

Less classwork, quieter labs, and shorter lines at the cafeteria make summer an ideal time to conduct research. If you planning on working in the lab this summer and are interested in receiving a research stipend, you will need to submit a proposal in early June. PRISM will accept applications from current students, graduating seniors, and new students.

New students, especially those just trained this past January, should review the mentor profiles on the website and then approach their preferred mentor as soon as possible about joining the lab. Contact us if you need help. Updated proposal guidelines will be posted on the new website and in the May newsletter, along with an exact submission deadline and procedure.
