Belper Goes Green Special 

Can you help out? 

We are looking for volunteers to help out with setting up, taking down and helping to ensure the smooth running of the festival over the weekend of 31st May and 1st June. Specifically:

• Friday 23rd May - this is when the big tents and marquees arrive and we start setting up. The marquee will be used by the Arts Festival for events before our festival. We'll need the help of someone with a van to bring 100 chairs across the road from Strutts and possibly to collect chairs and tables from other places around town.
• Friday 30th May - we need to put the market stalls together and erect gazebos as well as marking out designated areas and starting to put displays together
• Saturday 31st May and Sunday 1st June - helpers needed to:
  • direct traffic at the gate either to allow permitted vehicles or redirect to the hospital or Derwent Street Car parks
  • staff the information desk for Transition Belper and festival information, newsletter sign ups etc
  • staff the Transition Belper Travel and Transport and Energy Group stands to give specific information and advice
  • act as stewards to monitor behaviour, attendance levels, health and safety and compliance with no smoking signs in marquees
  • be on hand as a designated first aider
  • give assistance to stallholders and workshop leaders to enable them to take breaks
• Monday 2nd June - we need to oversee taking down the marquee and tents and dismantle the market stalls and gazebos and pack away. A volunteer with a van would be helpful to take chairs, tables etc back to their storage.

This Year's Attractions

Food and drink

• Fresh Basil will, of course, be in attendance along with their huge paella pan and scrumptious food from the deli
• Leafbone Pizza with their mobile wood fired pizza oven. More toppings than you could imagine and your chance to help make your own pizza.
• Sophisticakes Patisserie - go on, indulge yourself
• Remarkable Food - a Derbyshire project to help disadvantaged people to grow and sell incredible tasting food
• Sound Bites - the Derby not for profit wholefood deli are back - why not order a food box delivery?
• Veggies -  is volunteer-led, a community-based, social enterprise, promoting vegan catering and supporting campaigns for humans, other animals and the environment since 1984. We are delighted they’ll be helping to feed our visitors
• Coopercakes - gluten and wheat free cakes, also egg and dairy free and diabetic, something for everyone.... – Sunday only
• CAMRA Beer Festival - this year CAMRA will be looking after the beer and will have around 30 real ales available. Expect the beer to be in top condition then. This is in advance of the Amber Valley Beer Festival moving from Alfreton to Strutts in September.

Entertainment and kids

• Acoustic artistes on two stages – line-up to be confirmed but including Leo Swarvett (poetry), Dave and Chris (blues), Fingers and Thumbs, Sophie Revell and Kai Swarvett
• Folk Friendzy Dance Group - is a group of dancers aged between 4 and 17 years old who perform various styles of dance from Clog to Irish in their own entertaining way. Not to be missed
• Drop Inn - will be leading several 'Bash the Trash' sessions utilising their own refurbished or hand-made instruments as well as a mind boggling range of things to bang being dreamed up by Lynne's upcycling team. Junk instrument making workshops for all between the sessions
• Wildworks - forest skills including bug hunts. Activities are designed to foster the imagination, create and enjoy a bit of magic, and most of all, be fun. There are lots of opportunities to build and create all sorts of things, from weaving a panel using willow and other found materials to creating a dragons nest!
• Circus skills – juggling, diablos, stilt walking, spinning plates and unicycles
• Junky Monkey – Emma will be leading a Scarecrow making workshop on Saturday morning and building a castle from trash on Sunday morning
• Soft archery with 4th Belper Scouts
• Giant draughts board by Jo Kirk

Arts, crafts and recycling

• Malcolm David Smith is back with his wonderfully crafted wooden furniture
• Kitty Bea with her handmade gift tags and wrappings will be sharing a stall with Hidden Gemz Gifts who make soaps, bathbombs and the like.
• Carole Beavis will be making something incredible with willow - last year's sculpture was a feature in the George and Dragon garden for several months
• Yew Can't Cedar Wood Fir the Trees - Steve makes wooden toys using any scrap wood he can get hold of.
• Boutonnerie - making things from buttons and wool including unpicking jumpers and turning them into something else
• Book Crossing - join the movement, bring your old books and take away some new summer holiday reading

Energy

• Glow-worm - our local boiler manufacturers will, once again, have the latest low energy boiler and water heating technology on display
• City Electrical Factors will be bringing a range of LED lights and will have some special offers. You should be able to have a play at mood setting with a remote control
• DKMY Architects - Richard will have some of the latest and most environmentally friendly insulation materials on show as well as being able to offer refurbishment help and advice.
• Amber and Derwent Valley Community Energy - with news and exhibits showing progress with the hydro power scheme
• T4 Sustainability - with information on solar PV, heat pumps and bio-mass systems
• Transition Belper Energy Group – energy saving and supplier switching advice
• Westville Insulation – offering advice and installation services for loft, cavity and solid wall insulation

Health, well-being and growing

• Hillside Permaculture - Nathan will be selling plants and sausages from their venture at Shipley. We're also looking forward to the return of the cycle powered smoothie maker and workshops with a chap with a pole lathe.
• Green Emporium are another returning stall - this time for both days
• Ultimate Healing are also returning along with the massage table - go on, treat yourself and sooth away those aches and pains
• The Fruit and Herb Company
• Lyndsay Palmieri – is an independent NYR Organic consultant  giving advice on natural health and beauty, and discovering the benefits of choosing organic. Lyndsay also offers a range if treatments:- massage, aromatherapy, reflexology, ear candling, seated acupressure massage and holistic facials – Sunday only
• Derma Enhance – A whole body deep moisturiser containing a high percentage of cranberry seed extract, specially formulated to visibly reduce the redness, scaling and flaked skin associated with psoriasis – Sunday only

Travel and Transport

• Juicy Bikes - another opportunity to ride around the field on an electric bike to see how easy it is
• Cyclewirks – bikes, spares and repairs – Sunday only

• Wheely Fun Wheels - Dr Bike (Sponsored by the Co-operative) are coming with bike powered smoothies and a pop-up bike mechanics workshop - Saturday only

Some special projects:
We're asking Belper shops and the public to bring a smile by making and displaying scarecrows for the last two weeks of May. Then we'll get all the scarecrows together at the Rugby Club and ask those attending to vote for their favourite scarecrow...

• The station mosaic project may depend on finding the last £1k of funding - we think we can get our hands on £2k and £1k worth is being donated in kind. The idea is that artist, Christine Gray, talks to primary (or even nursery) school children about trains, buses and taking care of the world we live in and gets them to draw or paint some pictures to illustrate these ideas. Taking a range of ideas Christine then designs a large mosaic for everyone coming to Belper Goes Green to contribute to putting together. Once complete the mosaic is mounted in place on the northbound platform at the station. Some of the pieces of art created by the children will be scanned, printed on a special material and then mounted on the station railings. This display could change over time.
• Belper Community Art - Nicky Ward is experienced at community consultation and is a recycling artist and owner of the Bower Wirks - a gallery and workshop space in Wirksworth. Nicky will be making some large maps of Belper for those attending Belper Goes Green to add colourful notations of what they love and loathe about Belper. Time lapse photography will capture the development of the map board and could be added to the Belper Goes Green video. The finished board could be displayed somewhere in Belper for all to see and posters and postcards made of the final image - as long as we can secure the funding for the printing.

Map - just in case you need directions. Belper Rugby Club is next to Babington Hospital and opposite Babington Hospital on Derby Road - the main A6 trunk road. There are bus stops on the main road and Belper Bus Station is on Chapel Street around 200 metres north. Belper Station is off King Street another 200 metres away.
