Taste of School Gardens Raises $37,000 | Work & Learn Saturday | Cooke Foundation Beautification Award | Tour d'Bees | Pudding for Gardens

Taste Event Raises $37,000 for School Garden Programs

Grow Some Good raised $37,000 on Saturday, March 8, to plant seeds for Mauiʻs next generation of farmers, chefs, teachers, scientists and entrepreneurs. Local chefs and more than 350 school garden supporters celebrated all the good things growing for students in South and Central Maui school garden programs at the 2nd Annual Taste of School Gardens event.

Hotel Waileaʻs Sunset Lawn hosted nine restaurant stations where guests sampled gourmet dishes prepared from local and school garden-grown ingredients by Mauiʻs premiere chefs, including:

Fine wines, local brews, music, an incredible auction, and a gorgeous sunset view greeted this gathering of ʻohana, growing a bountiful future on Maui. Crowd pleasing bluegrass music was performed by BrownChicken BrownCow String Band and Dean Wong, Executive Director of Imua Family Services, served as Master of Ceremonies.

Proceeds from the evening benefit Grow Some Good, currently providing school garden program support in seven locations in South and Central Maui: Kihei Elementary School, Kamali’i Elementary School, Wailuku Elementary School, Kahului Elementary School, Lokelani Intermediate School, Kihei Charter Middle School and Baldwin High School.

Maui Culinary Academy Scholarship Fund
As part of our continuing efforts to extend community-based agriculture inspirations beyond the bounds of school gardens, Grow Some Good has donated a portion of proceeds from the fundraiser to establish a scholarship fund with Maui Culinary Academy. The Grow Some Good's School Garden-To-Table Scholarship fund will benefit MCA students who demonstrate academic merit, financial need and interest in culinary studies combined with a passion for mentoring our keiki. Mahalo to Chris Speere and his students at Maui Culinary Academy for donating their talents to our event. We are happy to pay it forward with assistance for Maui's future farmer/chefs.

Grow Some Good is a nonprofit community program of Tri-Isle Resource Conservation and Development Council Inc. The group is dedicated to creating hands-on, outdoor learning experiences that cultivate curiosity about natural life cycles, connect students to their food sources, and inspire better nutrition choices. In addition to helping establish food gardens and living science labs in local schools. Grow Some Good provides resources and curriculum support through community partnerships in agriculture, science, food education and nutrition.

Lokelani Intermediate Wins Cooke Foundation Beautification Award

A beautiful transformation of a school's environment nurtures students' learning experiences, boosts school pride, respect for 'aina, for each other and respect for themselves.

Lokelani Intermediate School has recently been recognized as the leading middle school in state of Hawai'i for their transformations of campus appearance and an inspiring kindness culture among students. The Cooke Foundation Beautification Award was presented to principal Mark Elliott with a grant in the amount of $5,000 to help complete and maintain beautification projects throughout the campus. Deborah Rice and Inger Tully, from Hawai'i Community Foundation (HCF) represented The Cooke Foundation during the presentation. Each year, this award is given to 1 elementary, 1 middle and 1 high school in Hawai'i.

Growing Kindness
HCF's Deborah Rice returned this week to plant flowers on behalf of the Cooke Foundation as an intentional offering to the Friends of Rachel Kindness Garden. Friends of Rachel is a Lokelani program inspired by the national Rachel's Challenge movement - which aims to create and sustain safe, caring and supportive learning environments essential for academic achievement.

Every act of kindness on the Lokelani school campus is commemorated by planting flowers in the Kindness Garden by student volunteers with Friends of Rachel (FOR) Club.

The FOR Kindness Garden is part of a campus-wide beautification drive that accompanies other outdoor learning spaces created in collaboration with Grow Some Good, Rebekah Kuby of Maui School Garden Network, Kihei/Wailea Rotary Club and Goodfellow Brothers among other community groups.

Plans include an outdoor learning and community gathering hale, aquaponics, native plantings and edible schoolyards that inspire wellness and greater achievement in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) curriculum.

Mahalo nui loa to all of our students, teachers and community volunteers who have dedicated thousands of hours to help beautify this campus and create a supportive, thriving learning environment for students for generations to come! Way to Grow Waveriders!!

Bee Grateful for Bees

Mahalo to Emil Lynch of Maui's Best Honey who brought his enclosed observation hive to the Kihei Elementary School garden this week to educate 1st graders and kindergarteners about bee colonies and their importance to our food system.

Students practiced mindful observations of worker bees visiting garden flowers, then fascinated over worker bees, drones and brood with the queen in their own habitat.

We're loo
king forward to more appearances with Emil and his busy buzzy bees at more school gardens soon!

Check out the book Busy Buzzy Bee for an inspiring elementary level reading introduction to our beautiful bees. For older students, you may consider watching Vanishing of the Bees documentary for opinion writing projects.

808 Deli Pudding for the People to Benefit Kamali'i School Garden

If you haven't yet tasted the pudding a 808 Deli, you really are missing an amazing experience (we recommend the pistachio, but they all broke da mouth)! And you have just a few days left to treat yourself while benefiting the Kamali'i Elementary School garden program.

Our goal is to raise $2,000 to fund a new shed, keiki-sized tools and plant nursery for this program.  Thanks to funding from Kamali'i PTA and matching donations from local businesses, this year's garden has doubled in size, added compost and irrigation systems, and Tricia Calhoon has joined as a part-time coordinator at the school facilitating weekly lessons with all grades... and this is just the beginning!

We have $800 more to grow at 808 Deli! Treat yourself and hi-five the 808 Deli crew for Growing Some Good in the Neighborhood!
